Along the lines of this ...

A sort-of beginner who can do the stitches but can't fake it to save my life ... needing a pattern or where to find a pattern ... not to mention suggestions on yarn weight & stuff like that ...

Any advice appreciated ...

I have tried many patterns, and the easiest one which I found on the internet is at the following link www.planetshoup.com/easy/crochet/tamrasta.shtml
The pattern is in single crochet but to do the hat you describe I would probably try using double or more crochet(stich).
I found this pattern pretty simple and easy to play with. If you need any help just email me and I would be happy to give you advice!! I also found a pattern for a knitted tam but found the pattern harder to do since you need to knit with four needles.

Good luck!!
