DS has a sore bump at top of his butt. Help, please!

While changing our 9 month old's diaper yesterday, I noticed a bump right at the top of his crack. It has slight blue tint to it, almost like a bruise. But it's actually a raised bump that's sore to touch. It's probably about 3/4" in diameter. Any ideas what this could be?

the location makes me think it might be a pilonidal cyst

Pilonidal cysts are virtually unheard of pre-puberty.

It sounds more like a sacral dimple to me.

Try googleing 'sacral dimple', especially the web images, to see if that looks like it.

They are not uncommon and while they can be a symptom of underlying spinal cord issues, I think you might have noticed something amiss by now if that was the case.

Has it always had the bluish tint? Could be a mongolian spot on top of a sore sacrum. Not sure the technical term for it, but as a child my sacrum would often get out of alignment and actually form a bump like that. VERY sore. Happened a few times a year until I finally saw a good chiro who adjusted it well. After that it rarely happened, and then once I had babies vaginally it has never come out again.
