Trike for a Toddler

My DS is 20 mo old and 34" tall. He LOVES to be outside and I wanted to get him a trike. His grandparents got him a Radio Flyer one, but it sits up so high that he is always falling over. I thought a "Big Wheel" where the center of gravity is lower would be a better fit.

We tried a couple in the store & I can clearly see that he won't be able to use the pedals for awhile.....which is fine. He seems very happy to just push his feet along. I did notice though that with some of the trikes - his feet will hit the back wheels...so I sorta want one that has the back wheels set out pretty far.

Any recommendations on a good trike (or ride on toy) for him?

when we got one for dd1, her physical therapist said not to use a big wheel type trike, but a more upright trike. I am not sure all the rationale behind it, but she was opposed to big wheels.

We got this when DS was 22 months old. He loved it and picked it up right away. He could move really fast. About 11 months later, he moved up to a balance bike, which was easy for him since he was already used to pushing himself along with his feet.

i came across this post by accident as our babe is only 6 mo but i HAVE to remember this bike. it looks great!

we got a balance bike for our 3 yo nephew and all the parents and grandparents are SHOCKED and amazed that he can balance and coast at 3.5 where his other brothers and sisters are still in training wheels. they think it's his amazing talent. we secretly know it's the bike!

We're looking at getting DS the Schwinn Roadster Tricycle. It has a lower center of gravity and a back on the seat to keep DS from falling off. It does not come with a push bar like the Kettler, but it appears much sturdier than the RF and Kettler. Our local TRU has them in stock.

btallen: I saw the Schwinn on Amazon.com and it got really good reviews. I'm glad it is at TRU - I'll take DS there to try it out!

I believe it is cheaper on Amazon, too. I liked the fact that we could take him to TRU to try it out, but we'll buy from Amazon. There are 3 colors (red, pink, navy), but only the red is availalbe in TRU.

We have two. A fold and go Radio Flyer which is nice and small and light and a larger Kiddio by Kettler with a push bar which is nice for longer walks.

DS tried out the Schwinn at TRU today...granted he was extremely distracted by ALL THE TOYS, but he rode it long enough that I could see that it moved along (probably because it has rubber tires vs plastic ones). It looks like the pedals are pretty close too, so it should be long until he can reach them.

Only down fall is there aren't alot of bells & whistles like the other plastic ones. DS loves to push the buttons to hear the horn and whatnot.

IDK - hopefully I can find a used one on Craigslist.

LMK if you get one. We didn't make it to TRU this weekend for DS to try it out. I think it may come with a bell, but I'm not sure. You can always get an obnoxious horn pretty cheap, too. I got DS a helmet and Wal-Mart and it came with a horn, so we'll mount that on whatever trike we get him.
