What to do about 16 month old and painful breast feeding

This is my second child and I was very lucky with my first, when I got pregnant with my youngest he was still bf and he got the picture very quickly, and truthfully weaned himself, but my oldest is very easy going and my youngest lol very stubborn. He is now 16 months old and still wants to nurse. Which I have no problem with, I weaned him from day time feedings because I'm a single mother and have to work full time, and I didn't want it to be hard on him when he couldn't nurse during the day. We still nurse at night , The problem is I'm now having issues with my milk, there is very little and when it's gone he still wants to suck. Which is very uncomfortable and sometimes painful. When it gets to that point I pull him off and he screams, and he can keep this up for hours, I rock him, I sing, I've read to him, i got him a blanket to try and replace his comfort, sippy cups (which is part of the reason my oldest weaned so easily, lol I think he liked them better then the breast) i've tried everything I can think of, and yet it's still a battle every night. I'm just wondering if any one else has any suggestions, lol because I'm very tired, and I'm sure both my sons are to.

If you think your milk is in fact drying up, do you want to help him let go of all-night nursing ? With our second, I had pain. I explained to him that the ma-mas hurt too much for him to have them after bedtime. Instead I had him nurse for just a few minutes right after he got into bed, but then not again until morning. I let him do this for as long as he wanted. He eventually did give it up because there was nothing there anymore and he preferred a sippy cup that actually had some milk in it. So for a long time he had a sippy cup of soymilk while he held my breast in his hand. Then it became his thumb instead of the sippy cup, and I eventually got him to keep his hand out of my shirt too.

Moving to Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy since this isn't strictly a CLW issue.
