Bipolar (Depression) and Birth Control Pills, can you recommend a good b.c. pill for me?

20+ years ago the pill triggered depression for me (suicidal). I know things have changed a lot since them. I am considering going on it now (new boyfriend), but was wondering if anyone had recommendations as to which to go on that has less effect on 'emotionally tricky' people like me. (I take Depakote, lithium, welbutrin, gabapentin and hypothyriod pills.) I'd love to only get my period a few times a year, but that would be only icing on the cake.
Thank you!

I think in your case, I wouldn't recommend the pill at all. Have you thought about an IUD? The Mirena has a tiny bit of progesterone in it and leads to shorter, lighter periods (and even eliminates them in a good percentage of women). Statistically, it is more effective than BCPs, although it is a bit pricey up front.

I'll second the IUD suggestion. I cannot tolerate the pill either. I have the copper IUD. It seems to have made my period heavier (had it for almost 2 years now) but I chose that because it's good for 10 yrs, vs the 5 yrs for Mirena. I have heard really good things about the Mirena though, and may opt for that when ever this one is removed.

As for cost, my insurance covered all but $80 of mine! I think they like the idea of not having to shell out monthly for prescriptions instead.
