pumping to build my supply for my wee guy - questions

hi everyone,

may i join in? i never thought i'd be here, like many of us i suspect. discovered i was pre-eclamptic at 36+6 and went to my L&D for observation. bye-bye home birth. little charlie was born 2 days later at 37+1.

after time together, because he was under 5 lbs and had shown asymetrical IUGR on his ultrasound, his blood sugar was tested and he was admitted to the NICU, and stayed on for a short visit of a week due to high hematocrit/thick blood as well.

now we're home, and i'm pumping every feeding to stay ahead of charlie and build my milk supply b/c he can't maintain or build it on his own....yet.

LOVED working with the LCs at the hospital, and so thankful for all of their advice and for building a specific plan for me.

what i'd like to know is, who else has had this pumping experience, and how do you know when to start tapering off the pumping sessions? sometimes i'm getting 1 oz, and sometimes 6, from one breast. and sometimes we get into a bad cycle, when charlie wants to cluster feed and i've just pumped. then he'll suck for 30-45 minutes, sleep for an hour or less, wake to do it again. neither breast seems to satisfy him, and he picks these times to resist a deep latch in preference for nursing my nipple. this has happened both of the last two nights, meaning i get almost no sleep.

i know every situation is so different, and that i can call the LCs anytime as well. however, i'd love to hear from other mamas who may have navigated a similar experience. i'm going into the weekend and dreading more sleepless nights...

You sound like you're doing great mama. I think you should keep doing what you are doing until he gets going on nursing; I think you'll know when that time comes. If you build up a little freezer stash, great. You can use it to get a little break or an extra couple hours of sleep sometime!

Do you have a partner? You might try having him or her give the baby a bottle or cup feeding during those cluster feeding times when your lo isn't latching well to give you and your breasts a break and the babe a good belly full of milk.

When baby is cluster feeding, though, you probably don't need to worry about trying to pump because he is creating the demand you need to build your supply.

Keep it up, mama! I've had two 35 weekers, and my first was a very slow/sleepy nurser. They do figure it out, and it gets easier, and eventually they sleep more. I know how hard that sleep deprivation is.

thanks so much for commenting, sunnygirl!

now i'm having engorgement, i guess thanks to all the pumping. what i can't seem to get advice on is when i'll know (other than cluster feeding) how much to cut back on my pumping.

don't want to cut back too much, but i'm wondering is continued pumping causing the engorgement?

baby boy is gaining 2 oz a day for the past several days now (we're weighing him on a scale we rented)

eta: at 2 weeks 3 days PP, i'm not using bottles. want to wait several more weeks at least. especially since he's lazy...

Is there a reason that you need to keep pumping? If your LO is nursing and gaining, it sounds like you're in good shape. He will build your supply to where it needs to be, all by himself.

Just to share my story--DD was full term but landed in the NICU for a suspected infection, which led to feeding issues, which ended in her release 3 weeks later on formula only. I pumped while she was in, then we transitioned to full time BFing. As a word of caution--I had an overly helpful LC, and ended up with raging oversupply. I had to pump regularly just to keep the pain away. I attribute it to not knowing how much to pump when DD was in the NICU. It took about 8 mos. to get it under control, and 12 mos before I didn't have to wear nursing pads full time.

So I guess my point is to have faith in your son and your body, and use those precious minutes you would spend pumping to take a nap!

BTW, congrats on your new baby!

heh, ditto on the LCs. i really think they are so concerned with the short term, helping moms w/ babies in the NICU, that they didn't really help me understand what could/would happen when we went home.

i ended up stopping pumping cold turkey pretty much, because my little guy switched to his own 2 or 1 hr schedule. i just couldn't pump anymore, and you're right, i didn't need to.

the engorgement subsided a couple of days ago, and now we're getting on quite well, except for a colicky night which has me worried. please let it be an isolated event!

thanks for your encouragement and experience.

as always, MDC mamas!!!
