Saxon math for 5th grader?

Thread Starter
Over the past couple years for 9yods, we've used:

- Saxon math 1st grade, didn't like the scripted lessons, switched to Singapore
- Singapore math 1st, 2nd, 1/2 of 3rd
- CLE Math 1/2 of 3rd and all of 4th grade

I feel like, as he gets older, he needs something that's more challenging, but also provides good explantions of the material. Would Saxon be a good choice? Is there something else I should consider?

Check out Teaching Textbooks.

pricey but you can easily resell it for close to what you bought it for should you choose not to keep it for siblings

There are lots of other things you should consider. Saxon can be deadly dull at that level. Here's a link to an information-packed thread called Let's Talk Math in which people discuss the various programs they've used. Here's a page of annotated links to good math resources. And here's another one to check out: math books that can make math fun and exciting, from Gnarly Math. Last, but never least, is FUN-Books catalog's selection of books that can make math fun and interesting.

And here are lots of suggestions for reading that can be lots of fun: Hoagie's list of literature having to do with math for The Youngest Mathematicians (preschool through late elementary). Underneath the box of articles on this page of math links I put together, there are listings for other such pages - scroll down to the Bs, books, section...

Have fun! Lillian
