How to find a 5k?

I know I should be able to sort this out with Google, but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I want to be able to WALK a 5k around the weekend of June 6. I've just joined WW and they've started a walking challenge and I'd like to do a real 5k at the end. I'm looking for something that is ok for beginners and walkers. I could even travel a LITTLE bit. I just can't seem to find any info that isn't for RUNS - or it's not up to date. My Google skillz are not so mad

If you google

5K run/walk race

Then that will help. You can narrow it down considerably by adding your hometown or state, perhaps the year 2010, and maybe the word June.

For example, if you google

5K run/walk race dow

you get http://dowrunwalk.mymcc.org/

The way a run/walk race works is that the runners start first, say at 8:00am. Then at 8:05am, the walkers start, so that they don't get trampled by the runners. The walkers are not allowed to run at all. Even when I start with the runners, I run some and walk some. Some of the power walkers are incredible, so I have maybe a dozen walkers pass me by while I am pathetically running.

So look at the run websites and read the application forms of the run races more carefully to see if there is a walk race component as well.

There usually is because it is more cost efficient that way.

Good luck!

I use this:
http://www.active.com/running/
Usually once you have run in a few races you will get mail and email about upcoming races from local sources.
Good luck!

A run/walk in the memory of my friend's son, who died of complications of Hunter's Syndrome at age 5. If you're in the greater NY area on Saturday, June 5.

I just started couch to 5 K last night so I can participate.

Walk into your local running store (NOT big box) and ask! I bet they can even describe hills, shade, quality of cheering sections, and more.

Have fun! 5k's can be addictive. Watch out.

ASusan, I wish I could join you!

Thanks for all the recommendations. I'll have to find out if we have a "local" running store (we don't even have a "local" grocery store, so I may have to drive a bit for this. It's ok, I could use a real walking shoe fitting anyway).

Runner's World Magazine's web site has a list.
