What do you put in your oatmeal?

My FAVORITE way to have oatmeal is with a little brown sugar, cinnamon, nuts ( walnuts or pecans) and a little milk.

I also like it with honey, but don't do that as often as I used to.

But...I am thinking it may be time to ditch the sugar, so what do you put in your oatmeal to make it taste good? And is honey as bad for you as sugar?
Or is honey in moderate amounts okay?

The only food item I can't have is bananas. They make the roof of my mouth itch. They are my favorite fruit. Bummer for me!

I like honey, almonds and a dried fruit. DH is on a yeast cleanse and can't have fruit or sugar for 3 weeks. He tried topping his with a poached egg this morning and said it was decent.

I like maple syrup and cranberries. Maybe some walnuts mixed in too.

I LOVE (high-quality, not like Nesquik) cocoa powder and natural peanut butter - very filling! But maybe not the best option if you're trying to cut down on sugar.

I've also been enjoying savory steel-cut oats lately - it's almost more like a rice or barley dish. Right now I'm making some with butter, cream, and sea salt. They're also good with soy sauce and maybe some chicken broth. I've been meaning to try a version with parmesan and a poached egg as well.

tuna with a little bit of butter and salt and pepper!!! it's how I grew up eating it and anything sweet in it seems odd to me even though I know it's more common!!!

a diced apple and some cinnamon make it pretty sweet - my kids will even eat it that way

Fruit.. I like blueberries but I always have some frozen fruit on hand if I don't have enough fresh to mix in.

on the days I eat oatmeal or quinoa like porridge, I like to puree a banana, a pinch of stevia, cinnamon, nutmeg and enough water to blend and I cook it in the porridge.

Or apples, or in the summer i love peaches and cinnamon

I make steel cut oats (soaked overnight with a squeeze of lemon then cooked).

I top it with cream, maple syrup (real of course!), chopped nuts (usually pecans or walnuts), and fruit. For fruit I use whatever is in season that I have around, or frozen/dried fruit if it is slim. Some of my favorites are blueberries, apricots (oh how I love apricot season!!!), peaches, dried cherries, bananas....Sometimes I also add a TBS or so of ground flax seed sprinkled on top. OH and a little coconut oil is really tasty, too.

(now I need to go soak some oats for tomorrow - I haven't been eating them enough lately!)

I like fermented steel cut oats (soaked with some yogurt or buttermilk for a couple days at room temp then goes in the fridge.) sometimes we just soak, but it gets nicely slightly sour when it sits out longer.

I cook it up in water with dried fruit (almost always raisins, though dried currants are good too).

I eat them with:
a dairy fat: whole milk yogurt, butter, cream, or whole milk or whole milk buttermilk
a natural sweetner: usually molasses or palm sugar, I LOVE maple syrup (particularly with cream) however it's too expensive except for rare treats, sometimes honey.

sometimes I'll also throw in fresh fruit (usually bananas), It's also good with some peanut butter too.

(yes, honey is better than sugar)

My absolute favorite would be oats, raisins, cream, and maple syrup.

Our favorite way to eat oatmeal is with a lot of fresh raw Jersey cream, with fruit-- blueberries and strawberries are particular favorites.

We also like it with raw honey, raisins, and dried apples.

If you don't have cream, full-fat yogurt makes it yummy, too.

home-canned peaches cut up with a little juice for sweetener, and chopped walnuts. Usually throw in some coconut oil, too.

I'm not an oatmeal person, but my mom makes these fantastic stewed fresh cranberries with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, a pear and an apple. It smells so good. She always puts that on her oatmeal.

I use a very small amount of blackstrap molasses, reconstituted raisins, flax seeds for my daily O-3s, wheat germ or nutritional yeast, and a little bit of raw honey. On that note, honey can be much better than sugar if you buy real honey, the kind with stuff in it that is thick and harder at room temperature than the clarified, clear brown junk, which has been stripped of all the good stuff. I always buy a brand with bee pollen and royal jelly in it, because you will not believe how much energy that gives you in the mornings! plus it is super healthy.

I have my oatmeal with granola (yes, redundant, but I like the crunch), sliced almonds, cinnamon and blueberries or frozen berries, with just a pinch of sweetener (brown sugar, palm sugar, maple syrup or stevia). I also eat it, when nobody is looking , with some sweetener (stevia or palm sugar) and cocoa or dark chocolate.

I grew up eating it two ways, depending on who was preparing it... my mom made it with brown sugar, raisins, butter and milk (which has become molasses, raisins, butter and cream). My grandmother made it with butter, strawberry jam (the soft kind that's just strawberries and sugar) and milk (now cream).

I know someone who always ate it with chopped ham, a poached egg, salt and pepper, which is probably a better choice than all that sugar, but just sounds odd to me.

I like to grate apple into my oatmeal. It makes it very sweet without sugar. A pinch of cinnamon is nice on it.
