folate/folic acid and breastfeeding

when I was pregnant with my now 17mo DD I took tons of folic acid the first 3 months... (I cant remember, but I think 4000 instead of the normal 800, then at 3 months I went to 800). this was due to a doctors rec because of a problem I had in a previous pregnancy. so I am wondering about breastmilk... I think folic acid does go into the milk and I wonder if it will not be good to take so much if I happen to get pregnant while I am breastfeeding... or is it a fixed amount that goes into the milk not related to what we take in?

thanks so much in advance! elisa

It looks like it does pass into breastmilk but is apparently harmless according to this article. There was a study released recently that suggests too much folic acid could cause cancer in adults, so I'd make sure to ask my doctor.
