We have this great loveseat/sofa bed that doesn't look nice anymore. I would love to have a custom slipcover done but don't want to pay $600!!! Do you know somebody that charges a reasonable amount and do the job? Any mommas that that crafty enough for a project like this?

I'd be interested, too. We have an awesome sofa that my parents handed down to me, but the zippers broke on the covers after I washed the pillows and my dog has put a hole in one of the cushions and ALL of the feathers are coming out. It's a pretty easy, boxy type sofa, but I'm not a good enough seamstress to attempt it. I'm hoping to pay about $200ish.

check out etsy.com ...

and also post an inquiry on your local craig's list... i bet you could find a local mama who needs just this kind of work.

Older homemaking/decorating books from the 40s, 50s, and 60s often had instructions for making slipcovers. It is basically cutting, fitting (by pinning together and directly to the upholstery) and simple sewing.

I would also keep in mind while getting estimates that slip covers take a lot of good quality fabric and time to make.

Don't be surprised if estimates to get it done locally seem high to you.

Yes on the fabric - I'd price that out separately so you can get a quote for labor alone. Oddly enough, I have heard that inmates at our local prison do upholstry - worth an inquiry as I hear also that it's reasonable. (Although that's SUCH a random phone call if they don't do it!!!!!)

Years ago I searched for someone to make fitted slipcovers. Between the fabric and the labor all the estimates were very high. Our furniture was fine, just very dark, heavy and wintery. I wanted something lighter to cover the furniture with in the summer. My husband said we would be better off buying a second set of furniture and switch out with the seasons!

Anyway...I purchased a book on how to make slipcovers; but I am not skilled enough to make the covers. I believe I still have the book. If you sew and want to try to make your own, you are welcome to the book.
