Help! My Weleda deodorant scores worse than conventional antiperspirant!!

I was looking at skin deep and apparently 99% of deodorants score better than mine! I thought Weleda was a super great company!! http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/pro...ose_Deodorant/

What should I do?

well definitely don't buy it anymore, i guess the choice is yours whether you want to toss it or finish up the stick. I am personally finishing up my bottle of shampoo that rates a 7, but i threw out a deodorant that rates a 5 because it kept giving me rashes under my arms. I know it can be scary looking things up on the database, but hey at least you found out about the product now, so in the future you can avoid it. I have started using secret fragrance free solid it rates a 4 and i am hoping i won't get a rash from it, but when i am home i just use the tom's of maine also a 4 or the deodorant crystal-which i found works pretty well even wore it out and about one day and no smell issues at all.

http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/pro...ist-Up_Sticks/ this rates a 0 probably the healthiest thing i have in my house atm.

I'm just trying to weed out all the really bad stuff which for me right now is anything rated over a 5.

I think some of that is really alarmist. I mean, did you read the warnings about things like witch hazel and chamomile? Fragrances I would avoid (dh is a chemist), but a lot of that I think is a little...too much to be worried about. unless you're eating it, I guess.

The crystal stick which is made of aluminum scares me more than some of the warnings for things like chamomile and aloe, ya know?

I use an aluminum-free crystal.

I agree with alarmist in this case.

You really have to look carefully at why certain items in their database have recieved the numbers they have and not just look at the number.

In Weleda's case "fragrance" is essential oils, not chemically manufactured sludge as in most products. So the first warning does not really apply. Secondly if I remember correctly some of the studies that skin deeep uses to determine their ranking system were not studies done on quantities appropriate to cosmetics but industry. So overall I find their number ranking system to be misleading and annoying.

And for the record I count myself as super crunchy when it comes to body care products. I use mostly Aubrey Organics. But for a case in point one of the Aubrey Organics products I use uses a small amount of vitamin A and E which causes it to rank low in skin deep. Why? Because Vit A can be toxic if ingested in large quantities...which is a great warning if you're talking about a supplement pill...

I agree. I mean essential oils can be dangerous if used in very large quantities or if you're allergic, but if that's the worst they've got on it then I'd keep going with it. I love skin deep, but you definitely have to look beyond just the rating number to why it's actually rated badly, you know?

I also agree with the previous poster-- the Skin Deep site can be very alarmist. They are basing all of their information on scientific lab studies, where they test toxicity by using huge amounts of things (like essential oils) to show that they cause cancer and other problems. Lots of things cause health problems in huge amounts-- even things that are healing or healthful in small amounts (like herbs).

I always try to take that site with a grain of salt, because this is the same type of scenario that got everyone freaked out about drinking sassafras tea (which I love, and love to make from freshly dug roots in the summer). Yes, compounds in sassafras will cause liver cancer. However, alcohol also causes liver cancer, but people don't seem to have a problem drinking that all the time! I think it's all about moderation.

I appreciate the concept behind Skin Deep, but I question the usefulness of some of their reports. There's lots of green-washing out there these days, so it's good to have things like this to keep companies accountable, but when a product made by Proctor and Gamble gets a lower rating than one by Dr. Hauschka or Weleda, I feel the need to dig a little deeper.

With that said, I used to use Weleda deodorant, but I've switched to making my own!

I also use the Weleda spray but I switch to something different for the summer because I found that bees are really enticed by the rose scent....I think that if you wanted to, you could make the same thing with 100 proof vodka and eos if that would ease your mind.

I use Weleda deodorant and feel safe to continue using it. Some of those warnings just seem off.

Same here. It's alcohol, water, and essential oil. I'm not going to worry about it.

Okay, after reading these responses, I carefully looked at the page and realized that I'm really not worried about anything that's in it. I'm going to keep using it... after summer time because I don't like bees!

What do you usually use during the summer? I hadn't even thought of this but could see it being a problem. Thanks!

i hate to disagree with you but welenda uses stuff like linalol as a fragrance. it isnt essential oils. alot of the fragrance used by welenda or aveda arent actually essential oils, they are frangrance oils based upon essential oils.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linalool

but the numbering system could be better set up, your totally right. it is confusing. sometimes the higher numbers are for stuff that is dangerous or deadly in high doses just like you mention with vit. a.
