Hi, someone asked me to share something about our experience with measles. SO I thought more might be interested.
it was 3 years ago ... from what I recall there were 2-3 days of mild fever, weren't even sure if it merited any worry ... along with a mild cold. we kept going out as usual though we did skip attending a wedding. then on the 3rd or 4th day she seemed to have a slight rash below her nose. Thought it might be due to frequent nose-running & wiping / irritation from the mucus. That evening her fever shot up and we saw a doctor who recommended abx!! he did not diagnose measles. We happened to be in someone's house and another mother there said it looked like measles. A couple of hours later the rash had spread in a typical measles pattern, which fortunately others moms had seen (we are in India). By then dh had bought the abx but we had not started it yet. whew!
Fortunately dd was still nursing (age 3.5) and needed no other food (nor could she have kept it down). Mostly nursed & slept / nursed while sleeping. We did give tylenol when fever went up to 104. Probably that was not necessary, but dh wanted to give it and I also thought it was all right at the time and gave it 2-3x / day. No other medicine. We did use neem leaves to brush on the rash when it was itchy. Calamine lotion also works, I believe.
3 days later, fever was gone. red spots turned brown, a bit itchy (pretty much exactly as the websites said it would). She was weak since she had not eaten anything other than bmilk, but she slowly regained strength over 2-3 more days. stayed in house / yard, played uno, etc during that time.
post-recovery she also became irritable / inconsolable at night a couple times (also apparently typical after measles) and we had to really dig deep into our creative reserves to engage her mind so that she could again relax and go to sleep. Let me just say, we did some interesting math during those nights :-)
