Flying with my 3.5m babe - what kind of ID do i need for him?

We're flying cross country (tomorrow!), out via Continental, back home via Delta. We don't have a copy of babe's birth certificate yet, though have his social security card, medical card, paternity affidavit, etc. What is the security and seating process like?

I have a really mellow easy happy baby, but I'd still like to streamline the process as much as possible. He will be in a sling and/or on our laps, no bucket or real seat needed. FYI, I haven't flown in over 10 years (before 9/11).

TIA!

I have flown with my kids a few times, including once when DS2 was 6 weeks old, and have not needed id for them. My older DS had his own seat, but no id was required.

I have also never needed ID for my son. When last we flew with him, he was 23mo.

I flew with my 3.5 mo this winter and she needed no ID. I think I might have flown on Delta!

None! I've flown several times with both kids within the US and have not been asked for ID.

I would take the ID forms you have. The probably will not ask for them but they could insist that you provide them if asked. You can carry the baby through security and last time I traveled you could wear them through in a non-padded, non-metal carrier. Anything else will have to be taken off. Also, sometimes they let you wear the baby in flight, sometimes not. Alot of these things are 'rules' but seem to be at the discretion of TSA and the flight attendants.

Seating will depend on your airline, they have different rules.

The only reason I was asked by Southwest to present ID for my babe when we flew was to prove that he was under 2 years old, and thus still qualified as a lap baby (ie. free!). TSA did not require any ID for him at all.
