non-toxic children's mattress?

All 4 of us sleep in our king bed but my 4 year old is getting big and kicks and rolls and snores, ahhhhh. I've been losing enough sleep already with my 9 month old nursing lots during the night, sooooooo I was hoping to find an affordable non-toxic twin mattress. I have found most to be $400-$1000 (yes for a twin). I heard Ikea has one for $150 that is foam but when I went on their website it said all of their mattresses were treated with fire retardant. I heard you can buy a futon with a doctors note and it won't be treated but I haven't looked into it.
Does anyone have any other good advice. I'd like to spend no more than $300 for the mattress.
thanks.

We got an organic cotton single futon a few years ago for less than $200. I don't believe it was treated in any way. Some have foam interiors, but we got the non foam one to be more natural. Most foam even ones advertised as latex foam are actually petrochemical. Even mattresses that claim to be natural when you look into it are a small slice of natural latex foam just covering petrochemical foam.

Organic cotton is the way to go!

I just got a cotton and wool twin futon for my daughter from Small Wonders Futons in Missoula, MO. It is green cotton, not organic, meaning that although it was not grown organically, the cotton has not been treated with any chemicals (formeldahyde, chlorine bleach, etc) during its processing. I looked for organic but it was just too expensive as you found. Their futons are handmade and usually treated with boric acid as a fire retardant, but I faxed a prescription from my pediatrician for a retardant-free mattress and they made it without. I like the futon and feel that it is the best non-toxic mattress I could come up with for the price (I think $250 plus $100 shipping to Ohio). I would suggest that you tell them it's for a child and therefore to make it as flat as possible (mine arrived sort of lopsided and I ended up having them ship it back, fix it, and return it).
