Do you pump and dump on Zoloft?

Hey mamas,
Just started Zoloft at 25 mg (a low dose) to build to 50 mg. My doc said it peaks in bm around 7-9 hours, but it was unnecessary to pump and dump. She said it would be an extra-careful precaution, if I wanted, but not necessary. I told her I was super-picky about what goes into him, so I will. But gosh, it kills me to pour bm down the drain! Plus, I'm trying to save up a stash, since ds'll be staying with my parents for a night while dh and I go to an out of town wedding. So, pumping to throw away means I need to pump twice as much to actuallybuild a stash. Thoughts?

NO!!! You don't need to pump and dump while on zoloft. Not at all. The molecule of the zoloft is so large as to make it really hard for ANY of it to get in to the breast milk. I have a family member who is a chemist. It's too big. That's why the med. is undetectable in bm. It's undetectable in babies whose mothers are taking it, too. Don't worry. Take your meds and breast feed. Don't think about it.

25 mg. is a baby dose, too. Teeny tiny. No worries at all.

OMG!!! That is such inaccurate advice. You do not need to change anything about how you breastfeed. Just take your meds and find some time for self care.

I am an IBCLC in training and my last paper was Current Recommendations Concerning SSRI's and Breastfeeding. You are fine.
