My 15 month old son's toenail is disattached at the top

Hi, my name is Jade and i have a 15 month old son named Joseph. The other day he was playing and had tripped. I thought he was ok at first, but noticed that his big toenail was disattached a bit at the top and it was slightly blue. The next day i noticed a gooey clear discharge under the nail and the upper part of his toe is a little bit red. We treated it we a little bit of polysporin and have bandaided it right now. We think it could be infected and are planning on taking him to the clinic tomorrow.

Does anyone have any advice?

Thank you!
Jade

Two of my toenails came off in high school, and my DD, then 5yo, lost a toenail last year. For us, it was pretty uneventful, the new toenail just grew in, it looked odd for a while, but nothing problematic ever happened. Infection wasn't ever a concern for us, the trauma was such that the nail stayed in place for a while even after it was damaged at the nail bed, so the skin was starting to harden underneath when the nail actually worked its way loose.

I hope it's as uneventful for your LO!

i've ripped off both my big toe nails. one came clean off but the other only came partially detached. the gooey stuff it totally normal and probably not an infection. my toe was really inflamed for about a week from the trauma. i just kept it covered for about a week or two while it healed under the nail and then trimmed off the part that came detached. it's growing on differently then the nail that came clean off but it fine. my nails took about a year to fully grow out the whole nail.
