Leaks with Thirsties on a lean baby?

Does anyone else deal with this? A friend of mine has the following situation:

- 6 week old, long and lean girl, skinny legs. She was 6lb 13oz at birth
- She's using diaper service prefolds (newborn size but I don't think they're as small as GMD orange newborn dipes) and thirsties
- leaks pee and poo
- We don't live near each other but from what I can tell she's putting them on right
- she air dries covers
- three hours is about the max she goes between changes
- the velcro tabs overlap on the cover, XS, so she's skinny

She thought it was her lean size for a while, that she wasn't filling out the diapers enough. Have you had that happen? I thought maybe it's the absorbancy of the dipes, but since they're diaper service diapers, they're certainly prepped enough.

She's about to go up a size in prefolds since it's tight over the hips.

The suggestions I made to her were to try changing every 2 hours, and to do the jelly roll fold to create a better catch for pee and poo. Anything else?

Is there another cover to try? She just bought the next size up in covers to use later, so she doesn't particularly feel like getting new covers. However, maybe if there was one that would be good to get for going out, she could buy one of those to have for better protection. I have a mother-ease size small that I could loan her, but maybe that will be too big yet.

XS Thirsties still don't fit my one month 7lb old thin DD even on tightest setting..
seems to be fine... just bulky...

but see still gaps and with gaps comes leaks...

I personally get the best luck with the bummi line of covers also had the same luck with our first DD. We tend to leak with the double gusset diapers..

BTW I jsut do a basic angle wing fold and snappi with our prefolds were using NB size and its rare to have a blow out and no leaks.. I change quite often though..

well, i would suggest changing even more often than every 2 hrs. 3 is definitely way too long. where is she leaking from? the front? the legs? is there gaping at the legs that she can see? i don't remember a lot from dd's newborn days *sniff*, but i do remember i had to change her a LOT. and she was in sposies a lot of the time at that point.

I don't have any advice about the diapers, but I agree 3 hours is wayyyyy too long between changes. I do EC, but have had diapers on both of them at some point. I was changing them every 10-30 min at that age. I much prefer EC. Naked baby and a potty... lotsa prefolds in case you don't catch it. But why people let a baby poop in a diaper has always confused me since learning there is another way. When you see the baby has to poop or has started, get them over an acceptable receptacle, like a baby bjorn little potty or big toilet adequately supported or outside.... that way you never have to clean poo off your child and they never have to soil themselves... but anyway, tell her to change her more often to stop the overload in the diapers...

Thanks! I'll send this info to her. Do you use the Bummis whisper wraps?

Yes I also use the bummi superbrites currently in NB size there so far the only gusset covers that work for us.
BTW we are averaging 20 diapers a day.. she naps 2-3 hours a day in a single diaper (I use a stay dry inner AIO) and between 6-9 hours at night (fitted with doubler) but during awake times I change as she wets poops etc.. I have zero desire to EC went down that road with our first but I still like to change ASAP.

Yep... similar number of changes here (haven't counted, but I'm washing every other day with three dozen diapers)

Another thought about your friends situation -- are the covers bought new, or are they used? I was really frustrated about the fit of my nb bummis sww-- it was leaking every time my son pooped, while the proraps contained things. Then I took a look at my small sww's and I realized that in comparison the nb one had almost no elastic. All of my covers were given to me or bought used, and I think that particular one had worn out elastic so the legs didn't fit right. The too-big size small bummis fit much better around the legs! If she has a thirsties with worn-out elastic, that might explain things.

I had small babes at birth and we did ok with Thirsties, but I had to change more often than 3 hours because he'd pee thru. I would suggest she try some doublers or doubling up the prefolds. I have some bamboo terry wipes I used as doublers for a long time. I love Jelly roll fold, too!

And if I ever had any extra length I needed to fold down, I always did it in back to create an extra poo barrier back there.
