Also, I was thinking of using raw meat and not cooked. Any suggestions on additions, etc.? Is the recipe complete enough nutritionally or do I need to definitely add something?

Dog Food Recipe

Ingredients:
1lb ground chicken (or lamb, beef, liver or tuna)
2 cups brown rice
fresh spinach
fresh carrots

Method:
Brown and cook the meat.
Boil the rice
Finely chop the vegetables in a food processor and combine.

Tips/Additions:

Most Important: Always consult your veterinarian when you are changing your pet's diet to make sure you pet gets proper nutrition.

Dogs don't chew like humans, so vegetables must be finely chopped for them to get valuable nutrients.

You could add bone meal or powdered milk to ensure your pet gets calcium.

Small amounts of garlic can help prevent tape worms.

Add cod liver oil in small amounts for Omega 3's and a shiny coat.

.
Be very careful with garlic.....garlic and onions are toxic to pets. Ingestion can cause hemolytic anemia. I keep seeing the recommendation of using garlic with dogs and cats online....really it isn't a good idea

Actually I would suggest that adding a source of calcium is crucial, otherwise you risk serious health problems. It can be via bone meal or some people use dried and ground eggshells. I wouldn't recommend powdered milk as it's not species appropriate and many dogs don't do well with diary products.

I feed a raw diet so keep that in mind, but personally this would be too limited a diet for me to feed long term. With raw I always recommend to have at least 3-4 different proteins so that it's well balanced as each type of meat has a different nutritional profile.

If you're going to feed the meat raw, why not just go with a raw diet? The rice and vegetables are not species appropriate and your dog doesn't need them anyway. Toss that stuff out, add some bone-in meats and you've made your life much easier and your pet healthier.

Also, I would suggest fish body oil (like salmon oil or a mixed fish oil) rather than cod liver oil. Cod liver has large amount of vitamins A and D which are possible to overdose on since they are fat soluble so the body stores them. If you feed your dog a little organ meat here and there (approx. 10% of the diet) you won't need this. If you won't feed organ meat then I guess the cod liver oil would be ok but you may be missing other stuff.
