Swollen penis?

Dh is home for lunch, having a fit, b/c ds's penis is swollen and red. He has been complaining of pain all day.
I know I could search for this, but I'm kind of freaking out, as dh is angry, b/c he wanted him circed in the first place, and still does.
He's 3 yo. Do y'all know what this could be? I don't want to go to the doc and have her say circ him. Then it's all over.

At his age odds are it is separation. Have you read this thread http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=764732 it might help you determine what is going on. And in no way shape or form is circ even an option here. If it is an infection that is what they make abx for. It could even be yeast.

Thank you very much for that info.
I can't help but freak b/c I've never grown up with an intact penis, and as it's not the norm around here, I'm always worried one of those "horror" stories will happen to my son.

The only thing you need fear is a cut happy Dr. I can understand freaking when my ds was around your ds's age he got a infection. Even though I knew he would be OK with proper treatment I was worried that the Dr. wouldnt know how to treat him. Thankfully he did though he did mention circ if it didnt get better and I promptly told him that was never going to happen. I have found that once I read everything I could about the intact penis and the things that could happen I was able to relax more since I knew the proper way to treat it. So I wasnt at the mercy of Dr's who usually dont have any idea what to do about an intact penis other than cut on it.

If it is separation your ds should be better within 2 days. I hope some of the information in the link can help you help him get through it with less pain.

I'm going to try the warm bath watch it for a couple of days. He doesn't seem to have a UTI, as he feels well and no temp.
I feel better already!

Add a bit of baking soda to the warm bath.

I remember two days after having #3 I changed the boys diapers first thing in the morning. #2 had a huge, bright red penis, just the head. I FREAKED OUT and took him to the ER!!! He was circ'd, (not by my choice!!!) The doc botched his circ! He still has foreskin on one side and his penis is now at a 45% tork.

Anyway, with that said, he had an infection where the foreskin still remained. Antibiotic and cream ... it cleared up. Although this is what happened 11 years ago, I am more educated now!!! I would not do the antibiotics now, I probably would not have ran off to the ER as a frantic mother!

My younger DS had the same kinda swelling at around 3. He was sore and swollen for about 2 days. We let him run around naked and kept a bath filled with warm water with baking soda, so he could get in and out whenever he wanted. I did give him a bit of motrin at night for him to sleep cause of the pain, no fever, and that was it. It cleared up on it's own by the 3rd day. Ever since then he balloons when he pees. Which is compeletely normal.

After I picked up my dd, he was screaming in the car, and he can hardly walk.
I took him by the doc to rule out UTI, and he checked out fine.
She gave me abx, but I don't know if I want him to take them.
I'm going to fill them just in case. He really seems to be in pain, but I'm gonna see how he does tomorrow.

Of course, my dh is freaking and threatening me that if our son has issues and infections b/c of no circ, he's gonna be SO pissed. Good times.

Thanks again for the advice, ladies.

I think I would start the abx put him in a warm bah with baking soda and then get a culture dine in the AM.

I might be wrong here but I am thinking that once you start the abx it is to late to do a culture. If he has yeast the abx will make it worse something to keep in mind. So I would consider doing the culture in the morning and see if it shows anything before starting the abx.

It is very possible for infection to start where the skin is raw. That is what happened to my ds. You can get some otc bacatracin or otc monistate and try the monistate first and see if things improve but keep in mind once you start anything a culture will not work.

She prescribed an antifungal as well, that I will have to pick up tomorrow.
She felt we should cover both bases. He is really in a lot of pain.
His penis is so crazy swollen, it's freaking me out.
Could he get an infection that bad within a matter of hours?

Looking back, he was playing outside with his cousins and roughhousing pretty bad. He didn't say he got hurt, but after that, he started the complaining, and it was just all of the sudden.

I wish I just knew exactly what it was.

that really sounds like he got a errection with the rough playing and some how his forskin got retracted a bit causing him pain. if his forskin is still attached it could of forced seperation a bit.

i would not worry at this point. at 3 he could be seperating but he also can be playing with his penis and causing pain. asking him if he touches/plays with his penis would be a good idea. he could of force retraction while playing. warm baths i found oatmeal baths with a few drops of tto in it helps my ds.

It's just REALLY swollen. I think it freaked out the doc too.
It's huge and red, and very, very painful. I keep going back and forth as to whether this could be trauma or infection. I've never been around an intact penis, and I'd hate to do the wrong thing. I hate to use abx when they aren't needed, but I guess it could be worse.

if its that swollen then you could try a cold washcloth wrapped around his penis to reduce swelling.

I know exactly what you mean about the scary swelling. Ds's was the size of his wrist and that happened within a 10 hour time frame. The Dr. couldnt even tell if he was circed or not because of the horrific swelling.

I wont lie it scared me pretty badly for fear he wouldnt be able to pee. But that never happened. The swelling went away just as fast as it appeared after starting the abx and he has never had another issue since. I know what caused ds's his hands where dirty from playing outside and when I changed his diaper he was playing "chinesse finger puzzle" so it got dirt in there and within 12 hours he started with the ouchy penis that went from humm does that look swollen to OMG swollen

I dont see how using an antifungal as well as a abx would help but I dont know much about that. If it where me I would do the antifungal first and see if that made a difference say in like 12-24 hours then if not start the abx. But that is just my personal opinion.

Oh, good. I'm so glad that someone else had that swelling. We just put him to bed, and it just looks like it's going to swell so much that is loses circulation, or some other nightmarish scenario. It wasn't itching at all, and it came on so fast, and he eats a ton of yogurt. I'd be surprised if it were yeast.

Thanks again for being here for a very panicked mom!

I hope that it resolves fast and your ds is back to normal tomorrow. It really does look awful and very scary but ds never did have any issues at all urinating.

Did the Dr. tell you to get the otc bacatracin? I used a lot of that stuff for a day and let ds go without clothes with it on there.

Well, last night he was up and down all night long.
He isn't night trained, and his full diaper was pushing on it.
It's HUGE this morning. And there was brownish discharge in his diaper this morning. I gave him the abx last night, but there is no improvement so far.
I just got the bacytracin, do I put it on the tip, or the whole thing?
I don't know if he'll let me touch it, but I'll try.

I am sorry to hear your son is having this much difficulty. I can't add anything but please continue to let us know how things continue to go.
