Cute comment today...

Today, while wearing DD2 in the Ergo, a man (60s?) asked me what tribe I was from He commented that the Ergo and DD's mohawk (yes, my babies have natural mohawks!) made me look Native American. I thought that was cute He's the first person who didn't have something negative to say! (We go to a pretty mainstream playgroup, which is where we were.. jst for the sake of getting out).

ETA: When he asked me what tribe I was from, my first thought was MDC! (tribal areas)

LOL! I love this... especially since when I walked into the fabric store a few weeks ago, with my 11 month old on my front (ring sling) and my 2 year old on my back (mei tai), an older woman walked up and asked me where I was from. I guess she and her husband had lived overseas, and so seeing me babywearing she wondered if I was from another country!

Then she thanked me for wearing my babies and gushed about the bond we'd have.

hearing/ reading these types of stories makes me feel less nervous about wearing my soon addition. I know it's a great thing and I am really excited to baby wear, but sometimes living in this day and age, it's hard. Thankfully, I live in a city where people have a tendency to be more open minded.

Thank you for sharing your stories.

I live in Chicago. SOMETIMES I get positive comments. People usually give strange looks, ask why I don't use a stroller (or assume I can't afford one)... once, when wearing my dd then 18mos old in a sling, a couple thought I was hillarious. I was at a bus stop with my husband waiting for the bus and the were just cracking up, it was strange! It was very obviously at me, also. I saw someone bust out an Ergo at gymnastics last week so I feel a little less "alone". There are a couple of moms who have Bjorns but their babes look pretty uncomfortable, scream, and usually end up in the car seat carrier for the rest of the class

Gnatty- I wish I were able to wear my 2yo on my back and my stb 4mo old on my front! I've got a mei tai, moby, and ergo... so I don't think that combo is doable. Maybe.. Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that I think that's awesome that you wear them both!

Put the 4mo old on in the Moby, and then put the 2 year old on your back. It should be just like wearing a back pack with a wrap, except a LOT warmer.

Some places it's a really common question. I grew up in OK, and it's a normal "getting to know you" question for anyone with a tan. BTW, traditionally my folks did, and some still do cut their boys' hair in a "mohawk" with a long "porcupine tail" in back.
It was nice that he was positive about it. Just goes to show you can't make assumptions about older folks!

I don't see very many babywearers where I am from, but we have gotten lots of positive comments. Lots of "she looks so comfy in there!" or "Oh, how I wish they'd had those when I was raising babies".

But I have found that most people don't even know what to call it. This exchange made me giggle, although I tried not to laugh at the lady:

Lady: That's a nice....thing. She looks so comfy!
Me: Yep, I love my sling!
Lady: Did you get it in Africa?

I love reading these !!!

I always, always get positive comments and smiles when I am out and about wearing DS (Mostly Eden Mei Tai, sometimes Ergo) and I love it!

However, lately this is the most common exchange I have with folks (DS is 20 pounds and I am 5'1" and 110 pounds)

Onlooker: Look at that baby, he's beautiful and he's as big as you! He must be heavy!
Me: Yeah, he's a healthy boy! He doesn't feel heavy to me at all, I've been doing this every day since he was born, so I've grown accustomed to his weight changing over time- and this way I never have to go to the gym

I used to live right outside of DC, which is a pretty multicultural area... and people would ask me if I was from another country all the time. But ususally they would have heavy accents and ask if I was from THEIR country.

Like "Oh, are you from Korea? I am, and all the moms carry babies like that there."

Or, "You must be from South Africa, because the whites carry their babies just like the blacks there." (This was from an African woman with a very strong accent and a big smile)

You can use a MT and an Ergo. My 3 yr old cousin is in the blue MT, my 2.5 yr old son is in the black Ergo.

Just wanted to say, I live in the south..... no one crunchy here. I have very rarely seen any other babywearers and the ones I have seen are wearing newborns. I have only ever got positive looks/comments, counting my neice who I babysat for, I have wore 4 babies. Like a pp said usually people are like, I wish they had those when I had babies etc.

Another babywearer in the south. I never see other mothers wearing their babies but I get LOTS of comments... all of them positive. Lots of "she looks so comfy next to her mama" and "I wish I could ride around like that all day." Several people talk about how easy it looks because I have my hands free etc etc.

I've had numerous people ask me all about my moby, mei tai, whatever I'm using, and say they wanted to get them for their sister/daughter/friend. I love that just by wearing my babies I'm helping influence other people to wear theirs.

To the pp who said this gives you courage to wear your baby: I hope you quickly get to the point of not even thinking about it. For me, babywearing is a necessity so I can go about my day... I would do it even if I got negative comments because it is so essential to me I just don't even think about what other people are thinking about it.
