cleaning your rural toliets with hard water?

Hey guys
We live fairly rural, about 1/2 hour to the nearest town. Our water is an artisian well that is in the basement of our house and its such amazing water, its like drinking a vit drink it feels like..lol...BUT the crappy thing is that its so stock full with minerals that its hard and I cant find ANYTHING to get the hard water stuff out of our toliet. It was here when we bought theb place and has gotten a bit better with using vinegar and Bsoda but its still there. Is this just something I need to get over? We also cant use a whole whack of chemicals as were on a septic bed and a grey water exchange for our bath and sinks. Any thoughts?

We have really hard water too, and use a pumice stone to get rid of the ring and stains around the toilets. When I worked at a pool, we used the same thing on the chemical/mineral buildup on the pool tile. It's obviously abrasive, but doesn't scratch or mar porcelin. Not sure if the pumice 's okay with septic, though I don't see how it could hurt...

I've also had really good luck with Bon Ami. It's usually used as a sink cleaner, but does a great job with our toilets and tubs/showers. It's cheap and earth friendly.

I hate, hate, hard water. We have to really scrub the toilets, as well as make sure that the mineral build up doesn't affect any of the appliances like the washer or dishwasher. There are some strong chemicals that can be used as a last resort, I have heard, but we haven't done that.

I have a thread in the general discussion about how much I hate hair washing with hard water. I intensely dislike the smell of the minerals. We are going to install a water softening system.
