so.. i am curious. i cannot for the life of me figure out whether it's all in my head or if a probiotic can have laxative effects. if it actually acts as a laxative, then why? it's only bacteria that should be in your guts anyway, right? i don't understand. (sorry, but i need to know)

Is it a dairy probiotic? Are you allergic to dairy? I know that lactose intolerance can have a laxative effect, so possibly it's not the wee buggies, but something else?

As in, get things going when stuck, as a long term solution? Or as in sudden short term gotta go? If the latter, maybe the shock to your system did it, totally possible. The first though, is getting things in proper order as they ought to be.

*cough*I don't know, but it's not in your head, it happens to me too despite having taken them for months.

they do have traces of dairy and soy and i'm glad i looked. i'm not allergic to those things but i'm bfing, and my dd has intolerances; i'm just now adding some things back in, and hadn't really trialed soy or milk beyond a cup of yogurt on occasion.
i'm not allergic to dairy, and it's not a whoa! run to the restroom kind of thing.. it's more of a.. wow, i went three times already this morning (nothing abnormal but the frequency)..
so i can tell it's from taking the probiotic, it doesn't happen like that when i hadn't been taking it. and it's not an explosive allergy type situation. just what i cannot figure out is the why and wherefores. hmmmm....

Honestly, probiotics as a supplement constipate me like crazy. My doctor thinks I'm nuts, but it happens.

I find that things like homemade sauerkraut and other probiotics FOODS are totally fine, so I just avoid the supplements. I don't know. I guess we're weird.

Probiotics give people intestinal issues b/c they are good bugs which clear out the bad bugs. It indicates there's a bacterial war going on in your guts. :-)

I was wondering about this too, but in terms of eating lots of lacto-fermented sauerkraut. I had a bunch last weekend and had the same thing happen (huh? It's only 10am and I've already gone 3 times!). I do have intestinal issues (irritable bowel, though I think that's a crap diagnosis).

WAY TMI warning: after eating the sauerkraut, I had very mucous-y poo, which is one of the issues I have with my intestinal problems. I don't know if this is related to bad bacteria or what. No one has ever been able to explain the mucous, just that it can sometimes be a symptom of IBS.
