preventing tetanus

Hello,

Sorry for yet another tetanus question. I think I read most of the information on tetanus in this forum, and still have a question.

Tetanus is the only vacc. that we were considering for our 7 mo b/c we'll be on a farm this summer, but now I'm pretty certain we'll skip it for now. Still, I'm wondering:

If he gets a deep puncture wound and we're concerned about it, can't we just give him the tetanus immunoglobin (? not sure about this word...I mean the injection of tetanus antibodies directly). I understand that a booster or the vacc. itself wouldn't help at this point, but I think that I heard that you can inject the antibodies directly. Is this what they give at hospitals for wounds? Can we get it there? Any info on this?

Thanks ladies for the great info,

Re: preventing tetanus

From what I understand, if there is a wound, you should make it bleed, that brings oxygen to the area and tetanus can not thrive in oxygen.

The problem is that by the time you realize that the baby has tetanus in the wound it could be too late for the antibody injection and he could get lockjaw anyway.

But from everything I have read, it is so rare and should really only be given if you live on a horse farm.

And yet -

Did you every read Dr. Mendelsohn's book " How to raise a healthy child in spite of your Dr."
I think he has five or more grandchildren who are not vaccinated and they live on a horse farm. And he did not vax against tetanus either.

Someone correct me if I am wrong. I've been reading so many book lately, I could be getting confused.

It's a hard decision. That is the only vax I am still not 100% sure of not suggesting for my new grandson.

But for sure not till he is about 3 yr. old if at all.
