I have something I want to post now. About something very scary that happened when I was breastfeeding and cosleeping with my son. I don't remember his exact age but it wasn't more than a few months.
My son was a really bad sleeper with mild apnea and I was an exhausted new mom. My husband was downstairs that evening watching tv while I was sleeping with the baby. During one of the many times my son woke up hungry and crying, I started to bf him and fell back to sleep. I woke up to a loud and horrifying noise. It was my son struggling to breath. My engorged breast was literally pinning him down and smoothering his face. He was still latched on but, he was trying to break free. The noises he made were so loud my dh ran upstairs yelling "whats going on!? is he okay?! why was he making that noise?!" From there until he was bigger and I wasn't so exhausted, I stopped nursing in my sleep and laying down to do it
It is a memory that haunts me. I feel so guilty. If he didn't make that noise to wake me, he could have suffocated to death. I don't know what I would have done if that had happened.
I was also shocked. Lots of women bf and cosleep during sleep? And I was bfing laying on my side. I read over and over that cosleeping babys are only suffocated by bedding, fathers who roll over and intoxicated parents. I had never heard of what had happened to me happening to anyone else.....until my friend told me she coslept at first but stopped when she woke up to her daughter choking on her breast.
So, apparently it does happen and I just wanted to get this out so moms here would know and be more careful.
Hugs
