Restless Legs Syndrome?

Anyone else here have it?

I know I have it. I talked with my Doctor yesterday and she said she would give me a script for something. I told her no. But as luck would have it, I had it bad last night. So I called the office for the script.

Has anyone had luck with non-medication remedies for this?

My mom has RLS - sometimes quite severe. Her doctor gave her a script for Requip, but she hated it. She has really good results with an herbal/homeopathic/tissue salts remedy called LegCalm. She says she also sleeps better if she walks daily.

I've read of people supplementing magnesium to help with this (not cal + mag, part of the problem is an imbalance between the two), dosage for mag seems pretty variable. DH does best with mag glycinate, 2-3x/day (different issue, for him it lowers his BP if he takes it at least 2x/day) but my kids are fine with mag citrate which is cheaper.

I have restless leg syndrome which got much worse when I was pregnant. After much research and trial & error, I found that magnesium works almost perfectly. I use Natural Calm - take about 500-600 mg in the evening right before bed.

It seems like magnesium either works great (that was the problem), or doesn't work at all (as if there was another issue going on). There have been some good threads in the pregnancy forums about RLS. My doctor mentioned that low iron may also caught RLS.

Good luck!

I get Neurology Now (which is a free publication). They just happen to have an article in this months issue about RLS. Diabetes and iron definciency is mentioned. I am pre-diabetic (very close to the cut off of being diabetic). My Doctor suggested I take an iron supplement. Which I already do, twice a day. So I know iron isn't my problem. I am leaning toward a diabetic issue. I also have numbing in my toes.

I have this too! It seems to come in clusters-- like, I'll get it all the time (mainly at night, for me) for a few months and then not have it at all for a while. I haven't been able to figure out what triggers it. It doesn't seem to be related to exercise, for me.

I would try the Natural Calm magnesium supplement. I tried this for a while and I think it helped, but I don't get RLS regularly enough to get in the habit of taking this supplement daily.

Usually, I don't take anything for it, I just get up and walk around for a while and massage my leg, and it goes away.

My grandma has this also and she has used the prescription, but she also says her doctor recomended taking aspirin for it. She says this works, but I haven't tried it. Her doctor also suggested that she drink a small cup of tonic water each day-- the quinine is supposed to help too.

Good luck!

Liquid calcium-magnesium, taken before bed, helps for me. It developed during pregnancy...and if I haven't taken calcium-magnesium for a few days/week or so, the "kickiness" in my legs comes back. Tablet calcium doesn't work as well for me, possibly because it isn't absorbed as well. However, while traveling, I will take tabs, as they are better than nothing.

Not sure if magnesium alone helps me. I think possibly not, as I took Epsom salt baths a LOT during pregnancy and still had the restless legs.

Anne, maybe read more about nutrients and diabetes (type 2). Runs in DH's family, significantly, and although it's multi-faceted, there are studies showing that insulin sensitivity decreases when you feed a magnesium-deficient diet. But I don't think it's just diet--DH and DD seem to need a lot of mag, there seem to be truly different individual needs for some things.

wholehealthsource.blogspot.com discusses this topic, I think last month? Mag and type 2 and other really interesting stuff, with links to the studies, if you skim the titles of the entries, it'll pop out.

I will check it out later. We are on our way out the door for PT for Gabrielle.

Thank you!

I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol (very high cholesterol).

I had RLS for over 10 years (got much worse during pregnancy). Magnesium helped, so did additional iron (RLS is co-incidental with low iron in a part of the brain).

But what made my RLS go away completely is being gluten free.
