Is round ligament pain ever anything to worry about?

From within a week of finding out I was pregnant I have had this searing pain in my right side. For the first few u/s's I asked them to check my ovary because it felt exactly like a cyst that was rupturing. But my ovaries were fine, not even any small cysts.

Now at 21 weeks the pain is sometimes unbearable. I have NO pain at all anywhere else, and to be honest RLP isnt something I have ever experienced before. Sometimes I will move in a certain way and the pain is enough to double me over and take my breath away. It is also starting to hurt when I pee, but its NOT an infection because I have been tested for that. Not to mention it would have been an infection I have had for over 4 months. My other silly concern is that I have had 3 c/s's, so of course I am aware that I have a lot of scar tissue and stuff- but would be that OK?

I have brought it up with my OB who said "Thats RLP, nothing to worry about", and that was that. I am just wondering if I should be concerned? Or is this how severe RLP can be sometimes? Obviously I have a lot of kids so things are loosey goosey down there, but like I said this is all brand new for me.

Thanks lovely ladies!! xx

If it really is just RLP, then no its never anything to worry about.

There are other pains that are similar but they are usually accompanied by other symptoms to point to problems (for example my placental abruption started in a small area on one side of my stomach but spread over the course of a few hours so the entire side of my stomach was in pain rather than one area. This signaled for me to go to the ER)

But yes RLP really can get THAT bad. Mine started out before I even found out I was pregnant with this little one... and its my third baby! Luckily mine is not constant but I have pulled it bad enough a few times that it is constant for a few days until I am able to relax enough for it to heal up.

Your post reminds me of when I had to have my appendix out at 14 weeks when I was pregnant last time. It all started when I really had to pee in the middle of the night. If I would wait until when my bladder was really full, it would HURT!!!!!! It got to be so bad that I would set my alarm to get up in the middle of the night just to go to the bathroom before my bladder was completely full. When I spoke to my doctor about it, she just mentioned testing for an infection. It just wasn't that type of pain. The rest of the time, if I was completely still, there was no pain so I thought that it had to be a muscle or ligament issue. But movement brought A LOT of pain.

Appendicitis during pregnancy is not that common but it does happen. It's also rather hard to diagnose because your appendix moves quite a bit during pregnancy, all the way up under your ribcage, even though you might not be feeling the pain there. If it persists or get significantly worse I'd try to get it checked out.

Yeah all that, I had my appendix out at 14 weeks pregnant with twins in 2006...scary stuff.

i have pretty severe RLP but it is not that consistent.. it has more to do with movements and activity levels and such.. if it is RLP a chiropractor (webster tech.) could probably help.. my chiro can tell when my ligaments are tight and which ones hurt without me telling him so that would be another way to determine if it is actually RLP..

I have had pretty severe RLP this time around. I had a c/section with DS1, and my OB this time around said that part of the pains maybe scar tissue separating as my uterus grows. He said it's nothing to be concerned about as long as I'm not in pain in the same spot for a longer period of time. Sharp pains when I move are normal. HTH.
