How much milk is too much milk??

I have always been an avid milk drinker since I was a little kid and that carried over to adulthood. When I was pregnant, I was an absolute fiend for anything dairy and would drink a gallon of whole milk in about 36 hours. All the time!

So now that DD is 10 months I find myself still craving milk like crazy. I sometimes wonder if this is what an addiction feels like? Like I absolutely have to have it and water won't do. At this point I am drinking a gallon of whole milk in less than 3 days if I don't seriously check myself. DH finds this crazy and I am starting to as well. I just love it!! It is so good and it's practically a food to me.

Is this way too much? It certainly seems it. I can go through a half gallon in less than 24 hours if I am really thirsty. I am still BFing so I know that some (not a lot) of extra calories are not a bad thing but this is a lot more than just a few extra calories...Is anyone else in MDC land a milkaholic?

If your drinking healthy milk (ideally grass-fed, and raw), I think it's just fine.

I LOVE milk. I go through phases where I don't drink that much milk, and then phases where I really do. I remember DP (who was lactose intolerant at the time) was STUNNED (like, jaw agape) when I downed a quart of milk (and a mango) as a snack. (and I wasn't pregnant ).

Right now, I'm ambivilent about milk, mostly because we can't afford the really really good stuff on a regular basis (yet, we're working on it, may happen soon), and I've rather aquired a taste for the better stuff. Non raw small herd milk just tastes blech to me, and pasturized milk in the glass? forget about it. (I'll cook with it though).

However, when we have it I would happily drink TONS of it.

are you drinking whole milk or skim? if its skim id suggest trying whole and seeing if you maybe dont feel the need to drink as much because youll be getting the good fats in it which fill us up more then the lactose (milk sugars which are higher the less fat milk has). when i was pg w/my first baby i drank 3 gallons of whole, organic grassfed milk per week. i think i needed the nutrients, and the good fats. the fats are good for you if it is milk from grassfed cows, which doesnt necessarily mean organic, because milk can be organic and not be at all grassfed. check this out for more info-

Personally, I would suspect a deficiency of some kind. Cravings are usually our body's way of telling us something, and to have a milk craving like that would seem to indicate that you're not getting something you need. WHether or not you're actually getting that from the milk is another story (like the pp indicated - skim milk vs whole milk, pastured vs conventional).

thats what I was thinking because it is a very very strong craving.
I only drink whole milk, for the most part it is grassfed organic, but if we are out of milk and I desperate I will walk to the little country store that is literally behind our house and grab a half gallon, which I will then drink half of as soon as I get in the house

I am wondering and currently searching on the web while DD sleeps for some information on cravings and possible deficiencies of vitamins etc, that might correspond with the craving but am having no luck thus far, anyone have any info?

Another consideration is your ethnic background some cultures have drank milk for centuries, while others never drink it past childhood or if they do only as cheese or yogurt. I know I just can't drink a lot of milk even if it is organic, raw everything. If I do my tummy rumbles and I get gas. As well it affects my sinuses. I really believe that not all foods are good for all people.
How do you feel? I would go by that.
