Once I add in my starter, I'm supposed to wrap the crockpot in towels -- is that the pot turned on or off? (I'd prefer to not leave it on overnight!) and with or without the outside/electrical part?

i literally was just at a blog reading about this! (someone posted about it in another thread). it says the crockpot should be off when the towel is wrapped around it. here's the blog... http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008...-crockpot.html
let me know how it turned out and how you made it please.

Well it looks like my yogurt failed. It came out tasting & looking exactly like it went in -- just plain coconut milk. No tang or anything
I'm not sure what I did wrong.
I heated it in the crockpot to 110F (I skipped heating to 180 since the milk came from sterile cans).
I took the pot out & stirred in the starter (store-bought soy yogurt) and some sugar.
Recovered it & wrapped in towels & put in the oven (off!!) overnight, total about 14 hours or so.
I do think I didn't stir the starter in well enough -- there were a few clumps on the bottom of the pot. I don't know if that would be enough to make the whole thing fail?

Oh well, DS & I enjoyed some cereal with coconut milk for breakfast... I hope I can figure out what I did wrong so I can try again!

I use my crockpot to make yogurt, but in a different way. I found out that my crockpot set to "warm" maintains a temp of 110 degrees F, perfect for yogurt! So I heat up my milk on the stove, add the yogurt starter and then transfer to glass mason jars. Then I put these in the crockpot filled half way with warm water and leave it set to warm for 8 hours. My yogurt has turned out great every time since I started using this method. HTH!
