How about summer outdoor-type toys, like balls (sometimes you can find them in sets of three - soccerball, football, basketball), golf sets, bubbles, swimming gear, etc. My $ range is usually $15-$20.

Lots of Good Suggestions

There have been a lot of great suggestions. All that I can think to add is :

- I Spy Books
- Games like Trouble and Guess Who are good for that age.

Yup! That is the easiest and probably cheapest toy for a boy that age. I haven't met one that doesn't love tiny cars. My DS has a huge collection of them.
