Cortical VIsion impairment and sunlight-question

Does anyone's LO have CVI? Our son has this along with a long list of other issues.... but my problem right now, is he HATES the bright sun. Our vision therapist suggested taking him to a local store and getting fitted for sunglasses to help- but my thing is- if I spend the money for specially fit glasses (he has a large misshapened head)...will he leave them on? (He's 7 months old- about 2 months functioning)

Any other tips to get them used to the bright light? WIth the warm weather, my daughter wants to play outside, but he screams as soon as the bright light hits him and pushes back from me like it's really hurting him.

I wouldn't spend the $$$ on custom fit sunglasses, you can buy sunglasses for babies for alot cheaper.

A hat with a wide brim may help some.

My daughter doesn't have the same vision problems as your son, hers are due to deformed corneas. However, she is extremely sensitive to the sun because her pupils are large and fixed (they don't close in bright light). She has been wearing corrective glasses since 4 months old, so we went ahead and got her prescription suglasses. Yes, it was expensive, but we live in Florida and it's always sunny here. Even with a large brimmed hat she was miserable outside, so I'm really glad we got them for her.

It did take a few days to get used to the glasses, but at this young age they are pretty adaptable. Your son will likely get used them after a short adjustment period. However, the PP is right, you can probably find good sunglasses without going to the optometrist. The brand we thought was the best is Julbo. Good luck!

We have the same problem, although DD does not scream. We do baseball hats and regular sunglasses. DD does not have the fine motor control to take them off though. DS has been wearing baseball caps & sunglasses in the sun since he was out of the sling (we are in TX, also very sunny) with no problems.

I'm not familiar with CVI, but my son has albinism, which causes a lot of vision problems and extreme photosensitivity. When we was a baby we used a lot of ball caps and regular sunglasses. He started wearing prescription eye glasses when he was 2 and we have always gotten him Transitions lenses that turn dark outside. the combination of dark lenses and ball cap works well for him.

Thanks for the brand recommendation. Our little guy can't wear a hat right now because of his head shape and size, so I gotta find someone to custom make him a sun hat.

My nephew had really bad hydrocephalus, and a very funny shaped head. We bought him an adult baseball cap with a velcro fastener in the back (from academy) that worked well. the velcro allwed us to open the hat , position it on his head and fasten it . The other thing that we would use is a sun visor that fastened with velcro in the back.
