OK, we did an experimental four days of nakey-butt with DS last week, who is almost 2. He did pretty well, all things considered. By day 3, he was telling us when he had to pee, holding it in until we got to the bathroom and had him situated on the potty, and would then pee and joyfully request to "close the lid and flush the potty!"

And then... he pooped. Days 1 and 2, he pooped first thing after he woke up, in his overnight diaper. Day 3, he didn't poop first thing. In the afternoon, he finally decided it was time, and we scooted to the bathroom with him holding his little butt. He pooped in the potty! "Oh joy! Look at the awesome poop! Let's wipe your dupa and flush it!"

For some reason... he was traumatized by the whole pooping process. After that, for the remainder (only like an hour before bed) of day 3 and the morning of day 4 (until the power/heat went off due to a blizzard and DH had to put him back in a diaper and pants because it was getting kinda chilly in the house), he didn't want to use the potty. He'd hold it and hold it and hold it (we're talking pee here; he pooped first thing again) until he couldn't hold it anymore... and then he'd pee on the floor.

So, on the one hand, he's ready. He has the physical and cognitive ability to be diaper-free, at least at home. But I don't want to push it if he's going to be traumatized by the whole thing.

He's back in diapers this week because DH, who is home with DS during the day most days, is out of town, so DS is at the babysitter's all day. My plan is to try again after DH comes back and our schedule is back to normal, just to see if it was some kind of fluke (like he was just cranky or tired or something...).

It's just weird, because he was doing SO well, and enjoying it SO much... and then was traumatized by a poop?
