Housebreaking, bell training, HELP!!!

I have a 10 month old yorkie named Beauregard. He is doing better about wetting in the house but the dog still poops in the house! He has his favorite spots and he'll do it right in front of you.

I think part of the problem is that he doesn't bark. He doesn't tell us he needs out. He doesn't really show any signals except squatting. He doesn't do a lot of sniffing around or anything.

He sleeps in a playpen and we are getting ready to transition to a crate. I jsut like him having extra room when he is put up when we are all gone to work and school.

I'm just at a loss as to what to do and I don't want a dog that poops in the house for the next 15 years!

Does bell training work or is it more my problem that he seems to not know where it is ok to go?

I tried to hang a bell on the door and teach my dog (a bischon/Shitzu mix) to ring it. Problem was he was terrified of it lol.

I noticed that when my dog needs something he just has a look, I can't explain it but it did take me awhile to figure this out.

Best of luck, your dog may be telling you and you just haven't picked up his way of communicating with you.

aha Katie that's funny and cute. My family used this method to train our lab and it worked really well but the bell ringing became so incredibly annoying, I think he rang it just for fun after a while, but we removed the bell and now he just paws at the door to go out. I've noticed from my own dogs and friends dogs that some really care about the type of attention they get, loving the positive and disliking the negative, while other dogs seem to just like the attention in whatever form it comes in. Maybe try to highly praise going to the bathroom outside and scold but not give a lot of attention to him for doing it in the house.
