For the second time in a month I have mastitis. . I don't know if I can get through this again. The first bout kicked my butt to the curb. DS is 6.5 months and I am ready to throw in the bf towel even though it breaks my heart.

Ohhhhhh how I feel your pain! I got mastitis 4 times while BF DD and bad. I mean fever of 103,chills,headache etc. What cured me everytime...RAW GARLIC. I would eat 3-6 cloves a day for at least 3 days or until I felt 100%. It's works so well, it's amazing really. I chop it up and put it in yogurt, on toast with almond butter and honey or make homemade tomato sauce and throw the raw garlic in there. You will feel better so quickly. I would also take some echinacea as it's very cleansing to the milk ducts

Aww, Mama. That is nasty. Hang in there.

It may help to figure out how to prevent mastitis in your case. That way you can avoid the triggers and hopefully not have to go through this ever again!

Some common mastitis evils to watch out for: new bras, underwire bras, baby carriers, backpacks (and thing that puts pressure on the breast/s that blocks the ducts), exhaustion, blocked ducts. Some mamas find that taking lecithin to prevent blocked ducts can help them avoid mastitis too.

For now, can you just head to bed with baby and nurse nurse nurse? Ignore the house, work, the rest of the family and get mothered yourself?

Thanks for the raw garlic tip, unfortunately I have nausea and vomiting when this happens so I am not sure I would be able to get it down.

I do put myself on bedrest and sleep as much as possible and nurse as much as baby will take.

I did go to emergency last night, my fever was creeping up, I was having difficulty keeping fluids down and generally felt worse, I started on IV antibiotics, got some iv fluids and some meds for the nausea. Today I am feeling better.

I do prefer natural remedies but there is a point to me that western medicine is appropiate.

OH man throwing up no fun are you pumping that side a lot at least?

Make sure you get on a good probiotic for you and baby once your done with the antibiotics. Maybe take echinacea as a preventive once you are doing better. Hope you feel better soon
