If you use a pacifier when did you introduce it?

And what kind? I'm due with #2 in a couple weeks and would like to try a pacifier (please no flames). We tried one with DD1 but not until about 3 weeks since I was concerned about nipple confusion, and she never wanted one. She had a huge need to suck through, and the only way she could fall asleep is with someone's finger in her mouth. Once she had enough control she began sucking her thumb and now she does that constantly. I would like to avoid both having my finger in her mouth for hours at a time and also the thumb sucking. I know all babies are different but I was wondering when you introduced the pacifier and if it had any effect on breastfeeding.

Thanks!!

With dd we waited until about 4wks and she wouldn't take one. With ds1, we waited until about 2wks and he took one until 10 months. With ds2, I intro'd it the night he was born He loves it!

I waited 2 weeks. He takes soothies and nuks, but refused the advent paci.

We introduced it around 3 weeks old and she uses a Soothie pacifier. She pretty much only takes it in the car and at night after she is done nursing and just needs something to suck on to help her fall asleep.

As anti-paci as I am, I was so fried right after the birth that we offered him a paci on day 2. He refused it. We've tried periodically since then and he still refuses, and he's almost 7 mos. I got him a soothie teether last week, and he'll play with it, but he won't suck on it.

2nd night in the hospital. I didn't really want to, but he needed to suck and I needed to rest.
he takes a MAM. haven't ever tried anything else. He only uses once in a while to go to sleep.

In the hospital, not by my choice, but I probably would have ended up giving one anyways. Really messed up his latch, and it was very painful for 2 months for me. Don't recommend it til later.

My son had a pacifier the second day after birth, not by my choice. He was in the NICU and they give every baby one. It was a soothie. He would refuse any other type of pacifier. We did have a difficult time with nursing at first. For us, I think it was a combo of the early paci, the stuff they had pumping into him , and him not having full access to nursing within the first 4 days of his life. The only way I could get him to latch was with a shield. He didn't know how to latch onto just by breast. He finally got it around 2 months without help, and ditched the paci at 4 or 5 months.

If I decide to use a paci with the next one, I think I would try these: http://www.jilliansdrawers.com/produ...rubberpacifier. Comparable to a soothie, but seems to be a more natural version.

We waffled and waffled on it, I was open to the paci, but not so early. I waited until 5w, I think, and he refused it. I LOLed because I thought it would be this magic answer.

He's now 4 mo and sometimes just needs to suck himself to sleep, so I"ll give it a shot and it's hit or miss. I also keep it in the car in case we're stuck in traffic and he's distraught.

We are using a newborn soothie one.

Advent paci.
My babe is a paci-master. We now just offer at night time and car rides.

6 weeks, Avent.
It's been super helpful for me because I have overactive letdown.

I have waited until between 4 - 6 weeks with all of my kids... my oldest had her's until she was 4 1/2!!! She did NOT want to get rid of it. My 2nd never took to it. My 3rd still has her's and she's 2 1/2 and I'm trying to limit it to bedtime but we just moved and she just got a new baby brother so I'm being pretty lenient! My newest is just 3 weeks and I'm working on milk supply issues so when he wants to suck, he gets boob although a couple more weeks and I think I'll let him have one... he's often finding his fingers and I prefer babies using pacifiers to their thumbs (I was a nanny to a kid who sucked his thumb so much the nail would keep coming off -- gross!).

We use Avent mostly. b/c I don't like the orthodontic style.

we did 3 weeks after breastfeeding was established, which, for us was about 4months. he took to it like an old friend. He has now started refusing it at 7 months. we used an avent and soothie.

We waited until 8 weeks and he refused it until he was about 3 months old. Then he got the hang of it. We tried different ones but he liked the avent. He's three now and starting to give it up. It is only allowed in bed.

6 weeks - a Tommee Tippee paci - he only takes it when he is cranky/fighting sleep - and most of the time he prefers the boob. The paci is super useful for me when he has gas and want comfort suck but doesn't want the milk. It also helps in the car. So it's useful in my arsenal and doesn't mess up our BFing relationship.
