I think my LO won't take a bottle and I have plans tomorrow night...wwyd? (longish post)

Tomorrow night I have a b-day dinner party with a gang of friends I don't see often and that has been planned for several weeks now (this to say not going at all isn't really an option). Originally, I wasn't going to take my 5.5 month old DD for the following reasons (in no particular order):
1. It's a 40 min drive, on a pretty isolated country road that I don't know very well and I feel uncomfortable driving it at night with a baby in the car.
2. The host has a small obnoxious dog which means no leaving LO on the floor to play, and a pet parrot that honestly gives me the hibijibies.
3. The host/birthday girl doesn't really like children.

So the plan was simply to leave DD with her dad (DH) and have him give her a bottle and put her to bed. I was planning on being gone from 5h30-9h00, at the latest, so less than 4 hours, but still longer than ever before.

But now, I found out last night when I left DD with my mom for a couple of hours, she refused to take the bottle. Sure, I was only gone for 2 hours, and so she wasn't super hungry, but she did nurse when I got home, so maybe she was hungry. My mom says she just played with the bottle but refused to drink.

DD has taken a bottle once or twice before, but the last time was when she was just over 2 months old. She has been offered a bottle 2, maybe 3 times since, and has always refused it, but I was never gone for more than 2-3 hours, so she was probably not very hungry. I kinda assume that if she's hungry enough, she'd take it, but now I'm not so sure. The problem is, I don't have much to go on!

So I'm torn about tomorrow...I'm not so sure the plan of having DH give her a bottle and put her to bed will work anymore. I could still go without her, and come back early, but if things go wrong, it's not like I'm across the street. But the reasons for not taking her are still all there. I could go for just an hour or so, but just the drive there and back would be 1h20, so really, I'd show up and leave right away.

Any advice?
TIA!!

ETA: Could it be possible she wouldn't drink because the milk had been frozen? Would she be more likely to drink freshly pumped milk?

Could your husband go with you, and hang out with your daughter at a location closer to where you are? That way, you aren't driving the road alone, your baby is close by in case she won't take the bottle, and you don't have to cut your evening short. I know it sounds like a silly arrangement, but I've occasionally had to do something similar, and it's always worked well. Even if your husband is just mall-walking for a few hours, at least you'd have a better time, knowing your babe isn't starving and crying without you!

In our situation DD would NEVER drink previously frozen milk. We even tried mixing it with freshly pumped...no go. She was never really excited to drink from a bottle, but eventually did with the freshly pumped. We rarely offer bottles (I think we only have about 3) but on the rare occasion DH does, she will take it.

Also, have you tried a different nipple since she was 2 months? I know they make different sizes for different ages, maybe she would prefer an easier flow? Just a thought.

Good luck and try to have a great time...you deserve it!

yea...we've done that before too (I agree, it does seem silly, but works wonderfully when you gotta do what you gotta do!); I'm part of a running club and DH brings DD along for a hike. Unfortunatly in this case, this girl literally lives in the middle of nowhere. They could go walk in muddy farmers's fields, but I don't think he'd agree to that!
The distance this girl lives at is really a complicating factor. If she was in town, I wouldn't have any problem, if DD fusses too much, I'd be home in 10-15 minutes. But not this time. Ironically she used to live in our neighborhood and moved out in country a few months ago. That's why we are doing this there; it's her b-day/housewarming.

Anyway...I'm rambling!

I never gave much tought to a different nipple...I'll try to head to the store to find a different one and see what happens. I'll also pump some fresh milk troughout the day today.

maybe think about cup feeding just in case she won't take the bottle? that way if she's REALLY hungry and doesn't take the bottle he could give her something.

if it was me (and it's just how i operate, so i'm not saying it's necessarily for you, just an example of what somebody else might do...) i would just go. you are never going to know if she will take the bottle if you don't go, it might be easy breezy. it's only 4 hours and i know mine would be fine with that at that age, and if she did get hungry i would know that it would be at the end of that 4 hour stretch so if all else failed i would be almost home.

maybe dh can go somewhere with her during the 4 hours for a distraction just to play it safe? like take a walk or something?

hope it works out.

It kinda sounds like you don't even want to go. =)

This may be unpopular, but I wouldn't worry about 4 hours of no eating. If she is starving, maybe she'll eat a little from the bottle. Otherwise, why don't you just nurse before and after? How often does she go before she "demands"? Just IME, my DD could go about 5 hours at that age before she got hungry, but that's her.

four hours with a 5.5. year old isn't that long. Bottles aren't the only way to get milk into a baby!

I would try the following:

Try with freshly pumped. Your milk could have excess lipase, which means that the older it is, the less it tastes like fresh milk from the tap.

Try different milk delivery devices. Finger feeding, spoon, cup, eye dropper, even milk ice cubes mashed are interesting at that age. You might also want to switch bottle types. (We like breastflow).

Your husband might have to be persistant, she doesn't associate bottles with milk yet-- she just thinking ooh, shiny!

If it were me and I really did want to go, I would nurse her RIGHT before I walk out the door and plan to nurse as soon as I get back. Don't expect DH to put her down to sleep (but if he does/can then bonus). Leave a bottle of fresh milk, not frozen, on the off chance that you have lipase issues that is spoiling your milk when you freeze it and that's why she won't take it. I think it tastes different either way, but that will make it worse. And get a faster nipple (she should be on to stage 2 or stage 3 by now.

DD wouldn't EVER take a bottle, it was really frustrating, but she could go 3-4 hours without nursing by 3-4 months so I would nurse her before I left and again as soon as I got home (unless she was asleep, then I would wait for her to wake). She wouldn't take anything from anywhere but the boob, not spoon, cup, dropper, etc. DS takes a bottle regularly because I didn't stop working when he was born, introduced it early and have kept at it.

Thanks for all your replies!

I guess you're right, 4 hours really isn't that long...she's gone 4 hours without eating very often before, and now that I think of it, it has been when she's been entertained by going to the mall or at grandma's. I'll suggest to DH that he goes to his mother's.
I guess I'm still in the mindset that she's going to starve if she doesn't eat now, but she's not so small anymore!

To the PP who mentionned it sounds like I don't really want to go...yea, you're kinda right. But I do feel a certain social obligation to go, and I do want to see my friends, but I just don't get why we have to go so far and we couldn't just meet downtown (which was the original plan weeks ago)!

Anyway, thanks for the feedback...a friend has lent me a few different bottles with different nipples, and I like the idea of a cup, she'd probably be good with it. Just not a shiny one!!!

I will also look into that excess lipase thing....is there a way to know for sure your milk has too much and gets yucky?

Taste it. If it tastes soapy/metalicy it's probably lipase. if it tastes/smells sour like bad cows milk it's bad.

had to chime in with our recent adventures with the bottle...

We have been having bottle issues here with our 10 week old dd. our 1st attempt at date night a couple weeks ago was tough. we practiced all week with several bottles, several nipples, a dropper, a cup, a spoon. it got to the point where it was clear she was flat out confused because we tried too many things & there was no way she was having any of this nonsense. my mom told us to go anyway & she would work on it. i left both frozen milk & fresh pumped milk. we had made these plans (it was actually plans 2 nights in a row) while preg not thinking there would be issues since dd1 took a bottle. our 1st lesson in how siblings can be very different

1st night-she wouldn't take anything & screamed herself to sleep. so sad. but my mom insisted we go on with our plans the 2nd night since we would be close by. we were gone the same amount of time (4-5 hrs) & she did take some milk from the Nuby Silicone bottle that allows you to kind of squirt some into their mouth too. She didn't take much & she also played with it a lot but she didn't scream.

This past weekend, the band I used to sing with before I had kids was getting together for a gig & DH told me to go for it & he would watch the kids. The show started late so I stayed home nursing her till 10pm. But then she threw it up all over me as I was trying to leave, I didn't have anything left to nurse her with since I had tried to fill her up & I really had to get out the door. I had to drive an hour & wouldn't be home till 3am or so. I was so anxious about everything...being gone for that long, being an hour away, singing in front of a bunch of younger college kids (not to mention hipper, thinner & probably much more rested LOL!!!) At midnight, DH texted me to tell me she had fallen asleep after I left & hadn't woken up yet. At 1:30am, she woke up smiling, cooing & stayed like that until I got home!!!! Not at all what we expected to happen & such a relief.

I think you just need to go for it & see what happens. You won't really know until you aren't there with the milkies to save the day. A sippy cup might be a good idea to try. Have fun & let us know how it goes.

is there any time that your LO will go about 4-5 hours without a meal? mine will easily go that long if she's being carried in her moby. i can get a whole afternoon's worth of errands done as long as i have her in there and don't try to take her out. if yours has a similar thing, just get your DH to do that. if i had to go out for that long without her, i'd send my husband to the mall with her in the moby, and leave some fresh pumped milk just in case... but i wouldn't be surprised if she wasn't interested in eating it.

Update!

So I did go, and I did have fun, and it was far

And, she did drink with a different nipple, but spat out the milk. She fell asleep crying, but was happy and cooing when I got home, and more in a mood for cuddles it seemed than for milk, so she wasn't starving, obviously.

BUT...the first thing DH said to me when I got home is: "Should your milk taste like metal?" Uh!uh! I smelled it, and taste it, and yup, it had a horrible metallic aftertaste.

So I guess our bottle issue is solved...It's not the bottle, it's my milk! Who would've guessed!

I'm now off to the BF forum to see if I can get more info or tips about this!

Thank you all so much for your advice!

Sounds like lipase-- you can read more about it here, but in short you can pasteurize or 'scald' the milk.
