She *CRIES* for every single diaper change.

Why?!? My LO can be happy as a clam, and no matter what the circumstance, as soon as I lay her down to change her dipe, she cries, and I mean loud, sometimes with tears. She doesn't have a diaper rash. And I am running out of "toys" for her to play with, i.e. "real" things that she normally wouldn't be allowed to "play" with that can keep her occupied for a few seconds so I can wipe her bum.

Are there babies out there who peacefully let their mamas change their dipes, or is it this emotional for everyone?

Sounds normal to me. DS goes through stages, sometimes he's fine and sometimes he still cries. It was more common when he was younger though.

My kid is right there with yours.

I think that he hates being put in a place where he is bored, and being poked and prodded (including the dreaded clothing-over-head routine) and he is teething so being prone puts extra pressure on his mouth.

He got so mad the other day he almost rolled off the changing table! Yeah...its like a four foot drop to the hard bathroom floor. I only caught him because I was super quick.

How is she on other occasions when she is laying on her back? My dd1 was the same way for diaper changes and other occasions when she was laying flat on her back. In hindsight I know that it was because of chronic problems from her ears. She had fluid and wax problems (still does at 5) and likely there was lots of pressure or discomfort in that position. I never realized it at the time because she never got infections or seemed bothered to be laying down while sleeping. Nursing prevented those things.

Some babies just hate diaper changes, I thought mine was one of them. Turns out there was an actual *reason* for her discomfort Just thought I would mention it in case it helps someone else!

DD starting doing this recently, too. She struggles to get up the second I lay her down. I've been trying to give her some diaper-free time before doing a change. At least once per day, I have to actually hold her down to get it done though.

Aw, that stinks. I was so on edge the first few weeks of Piper's life thinking she would get upset during diaper changes, but luckily she doesn't. She actually LOVES getting her diaper changed and smiles and giggles the whole time.

19 months and still cries 95% of the time. I am so glad I do EC (elimination communication) with him so I only lay him down around 3 times a day to put a diaper on. Nap, night time, and trips out.

Ds was crying during a diaper change when my mom was here, and she sang "itsy bitsy spider" with the hand movement. It worked, so I tried it later on, and it's like magic! It stops his crying every time, unless he's tired. I never would have thought of it on my own. He even lays there long enough for me to sing it a second time (first time=no hand motions cuz I'm changing him. 2nd time=motions- he's mezmerized by it!)

It's worth a shot, right?

Gee, this is interesting. My DD has always hated diaper changes and lying on her back generally, except when going to sleep - but you are right, she always nurses down.

How did you figure out it was an ear fluid problem, and is there anything to do about it?

She ended up with a communication delay as she couldn't hear from her ears being blocked. I didn't realize until much later when we became concerned that she had a hearing problem. We took her in for testing but their only answer was to put her on abx or to put in tubes. We didn't agree with either for her.

Instead we saw a naturopath. We now have her on either flax oil or fish oil to reduce inflamation. It has made a huge difference! She said that most of the kids she sees with sleep issues also have blocked ears. That was also true of my dd. She now also sleeps better at night, which has been a huge relief!

Neither of my kids would lay down for diaper changes. I don't know many babies who like it, really. Diapers unhook just as well standing or sitting. It's slightly more acrobatic, but totally do-able to clean a bum and everything in a different position than the back. I think that's why they make pull up disposable diapers for a much smaller set. If you hold the dipe and cover on your hand (I never pinned or snappied), then kind of pick up the baby between the legs, you should get about the right position, then just plop her on your hip, keep supporting with one hand hand and fasten with the other. Even if you only sit her down to diaper her, mine liked that much better than full laying down.

Yeah - my babe hates to be on his back. Singing works for us, too!

Hmm...I'm not sure about the ear wax thing. She does have lots of ear wax, but I don't know if that's normal for a baby or not, since she's my first. Her hearing seems to be fine. Hmm... Something to be aware of, for sure.

She is usually okay on her back. *Some* dipe changes are okay. Usually the first one of the day is not too bad. Other times we just have to stand near the changing table and grab a dipe and she starts to cry! Poor baby.

I think it may be just a phase of not wanting to be held down, or prevented from doing what she wants to do (move and crawl and wiggle!)

To the PP who mentioned Itsy Bitsy Spider...I have been doing almost the whole soundtrack from the Sound of Music for months now! I will try this new song, complete with hand motions. You never know...

both of my dd hated their diapers changed. My oldest sort of got used to it eventually, but still hated having to stop to get it changed. My second? Well, not only have we learned how to diaper her while she's standing, we have had to learn how to wipe her bum and put the diaper on with her legs closed. Its a talent, I tell ya.

g does not like having her diaper changed, although she doesn't usually cry. i have to pin her down most of the time. i'm really weird about getting the diaper on perfectly, so this has always been an issue for us. lol.

I nursed during about 80% of diaper changes during the first two months.
