What product or hopefully household item can I use to get rid of the new musty smell that has permeated our basement? We live in the northeast where there was major flooding last month, and though thankfully we got no water, it definitely is very wet ground around here and it's making our basement smell musty. Should I buy a huge amount of baking soda and leave it open? Coffee grounds? What do I do? Thank you in advance.

Our basement gets that way as well, what I did was buy a couple of the big containers of baking soda and put it on plates around the basement. If you can open you windows down there I did that as well. (only 2 of our open though).
It did help, although it didn't smell fresh but it was much less noticeable. I will be watching this thread for any other good ideas.

Ah Rosemary, you are reading my mind. Hello fellow neighbor. I'm a RI'er who got 10feet in the basement and it's. . . . .well. . . . . not so fresh.
We've been doing baking soda in the basement and keeping those shrimpy little windows open hoping for the best. Starting Monday through the next weekend is supposed to be sunny and mild so maybe we'll get some of that smell under control. When we had mold issues last spring with all that crazy months-long rain we broke down and purchased some DampRid from Lowe's to get the moisture and musty smell under control and it worked fabulously. I have no idea what's in it so it was put up high away from small people but it breaks down to pure water and you literally remove the lid and put the container somehwere and forget about it until it's time to buy another. They lasted a month or two and really did make a huge difference in the smell and moisture control.
