Anyone from GA? I am looking at foster to adopt and have ??

Ok we live in the mid-west. But we MIGHT be up tomove to GA in 18 to 24 months (or to another midwest state).

We were in teh process of certifying here as foster to adopot, but stopped when this move came up -- we knew we'd not get an adoption final and we didn't feel it fair to a foster child to take them in unsure of how long we could keep them -- lookin at moving ins 12 months or 24 months ... or .. well we don't know. We did not want to disrupt a placement and cause more stress to a child.

We plan to certify as soon as we get whereever we are going, GA or MO .... and start the process of foster to adopt.

So I am in GA right now, for a month,

and for no other reason that that i have been looking athte foster to adopot process in GA.

I have some questions.

In out home state there is ONE "adgency" that recrutis and trains FP and then DFS "manages" the children. The FP after training are assinged to a local office / adgency. there is no "choosing one" it is all assinged by region ...more or less the "parent adgency" is one adgency with differnt regions assinged to differnt groups.

well it LOOKS like in GA the FP choose and sign up with an not for profit or private adgency. But maybe you don't have to -- maybe you can work drirectly with DFS?

Also it looks like -- maybe -- if you sign with an private adgency to adopt (not foster) you don't do the 20 hours of training? (we'd want to do it, but i am just trying to be clear on how it works)

I am sifting thourgh Net Sites and looking for someone to e-mail who cabn help me out with the basics ....but I was wondering if we have any GA families here that can help me out.

I have no expereince with teh choosing a private or other adgency to work with ,... a placement adgency .... i'd hate to choose the wrrong one, or cost us money we didn't have to spend, yk?

I do not live in GA anymore, and haven't since my family moved when I was 3. BUT - before you do anything I would check into GA's adoption law's carefully.

Reason being, the GA adoption laws are the reason my parents chose international adoption. It used to be (in the 80's, so its very possible that they have changed) that anytime after an adoption was finalized (yes, FINALIZED) the bio parents could come back and re-claim their parental rights and get the child back. So, basically, you never knew if you got to keep the kid forever or not b/c the bio parents always trumped adoptive parents. Always. My parents had friends who lost a toddler after his adoption had been finalized.

So, check the laws, maybe ask an adoption lawyer if that has changed. Then move forward.

That's not legal, so I wouldn't worry about it. Especially since you are interested in foster adoption.

I've got a friend who used to foster in GA. I'll send her your questions and see if she has time to answer them.

thanks, I am just wondering about it.

But in the end, we go where we are sent -- and we try to walk the FP path when we get there .... not like there is a diffent choice
