I am posting on behalf of a good friend who isn't as comfortable with computers. She is hsing her granddaughter for a variety of reasons & sending her to school probably isn't something that is going to happen again for a number of reasons. However, they are feeling like the hsing isn't going well b/c my friend doesn't feel like she knows the material enough to teach it to her. She hasn't made the kind of progress they'd like to see in a few subjects.
I have been going over to their house a few times/month and working with her on math and writing as a tutor. Ideally, they'd like me to just teach her for them next year, again as a fairly ft tutor b/c you can't legally hs someone else's child in our state. I'm just not sure if we are going to be able to make that work due to other commitments I have (including a pt job and my own dd whom I hope to hs ft next year). I could, of course, teach them together, but I'd need to quit my pt job which would be a challenge financially unless I get a lot of other "tutoring" students.
So, we're trying to come up with alternatives. We've had her doing EPGY math and language arts through a hs coop open enrollment (much less expensive and no test admission requirements). The math part, where they are really concerned re hsing, isn't going too well & she needs more help with the EPGY math than her gm can give. I haven't been able to be there daily to help her with it, either. We're thinking that EPGY isn't going to work for them next year.
They're looking at COVA (a K-12 online charter). One concern re this is that they are pretty relaxed hsers and do 3-4 hrs of hsing daily, at most. I've heard that the reporting requirements in terms of getting through a certain amount of work can be fairly formal. Has anyone used K-12 online & do you know if you can do less than they specify w/out getting into issues with the charter?
Also, if the parent/gp doesn't feel like she understands some of the material (math in particular), can the child pretty much learn it on her own with no help from the parent? Her gm's concern is that neither she nor her gd are particularly math intuitive & she doesn't know how much middle school math, algebra, etc. she can reasonably expect her to learn with no instruction beyond what the computer is giving. The audio lectures on EPGY aren't doing it for either of them. I've generally found the audio lectures to explain well enough that I can help if the child didn't understand, but that is not the case for them.
She was thinking that the visual/no audio format in which COVA presents things might be easier & also b/c it is not a program geared at high ability kids, it might be more comprehensible. Having not used K-12, I don't know. Any input?
