How big of a garden would I need?

These past few years my garden has been small. Just 2 4x4 square foot beds, a small herb garden and about 8 feet along one fence. However, I'm looking at expanding next gardening season.

So, how big of a garden would I need in order to grow enough for my family to eat all our own produce in the summer, with enough to put away for the winter (through canning, freezing, dehydrating, etc)? We're a family of 3, but eventually want another babe.

I know that sounds ambitious, but I won't be doing it all next year. I'm just trying to come up with a plan for the yard and garden space. I I'd like to figure out how much we want to expand it by each year, and how long it will take to get to that ideal.

Do any of you accomplish this? If so, how do you do it? Do you spend all day everyday in the garden or the kitchen?

I have a plan for a garden that alleges to provide enough for a family of 4. We are like you where there are only 3 of us now, but eventually :

I can't find the link, but there is a site on the internet that gives you a whole list I modified for space restraints (I grow a little closer than recomended) and what we like to eat (corn, peas, beans etc)

Asparagus 32 plants 9"-12"
Bush beans 80-120' row 360 seeds 4"
broccoli 12-15 plants 24"-36" ?? 12
carrots 40 foot row 240 seeds 2"-4"
cauliflower 12-15 pants 18" -24"
corn 140 ft row 210 plants 8-12" (really make a cube)
cucumbers 6-8 plants 8-36"
leaf luttuce 20-30' row 30 plants 12"
peas 120-160 feet 960 seeds 2"
peppers 6-10 plants 18-14"
pumpkins 3 lants 36"-24"
spinach 10-20' row 120 plants 12"
squash 3 plants 36-48" Winter? Summer?
tomatoes 10-15 plants 24-36"

I don't know if I should move into the garden now or not Hopefully it won't be to much Right now we have about 1/3 of this plus some others like rhubarb broccoli onions and strawberries. I am busy in the spring, then it kinda takes care of it's self. Then I am busy in the fall with harvest and canning. Preserving really takes the bulk of my time, but I enjoy it because I like to cook especially with things *I* grew!
Sorry that got long

BIG!!! Think really big.

We garden 600 square feet and eat absolutely everything out of the garden every summer. We live on a 1/4 acre and could reasonably double our garden space or even triple it if I was willing to dig up the front yard (my neighbors would have a fit). I think if I tripled the garden, I would have enough for canning/putting up.

That said, I recommend starting small and building each year. Tending a big garden taking a lot of know-how and endurance and it is easy to get overwhelmed mid-season when the garden work can require an hour or more a day.

This is a simple article (though I think they estimate low):
