Mama your a sissy. (spider mentioned)

So my daughter yelled "mama come look and see" so I did. There was a HUGE fuzzy fat spider on the floor, I have never seen this kind of spider before, it was sitting on a dog bone on the floor, the dog was sniffing it then ran away, my dd was looking for a shoe to squash it I guess.

I just grabbed a piece of paper and prodded it onto the paper, then put it outside in the sun by our porch and flowers, it wandered away.

I went back inside and there was dd arms folded looking miffed saying "mama your a sissy".

Not sure where she learned to call people a sissy, and I am a little sad she wanted to smash the spider

But I guess its one to tell dad about when he gets home.

I would also talk to her yourself. In our house the conversation would be about 1) Why we don't call people "sissy" and 2) why we don't squish bugs and spiders.

We went into why she wanted to kill the spider at lunch and she said that DS (her eldest brother) told her that fuzzy spiders bite.

I assured her you can move a spider without getting bitten and then I told her about sissy, too and she doesn't seem to understand that its a hurt feelings word, but she is getting it a little I think.

She heard it on a cartoon.

I also took some time while cutting veggies for supper to explain that spiders are needed and they kill a lot of other bugs that could hurt veggies and bite us as well. she likes that they eat masquitos lol

Wow, we'd be having a big talk about name-calling and how we treat animals in our home. I'd probably start by asking her what she means by "sissy" and why putting a spider outside would be perceived as cowardly.

Did you explain why its a hurt feelings word? If not it might help her to understand why it is.

Yes but she doesn't really fully grasp it I think.

She is 5 but because of an illness when she was an infant she is more like a 3 year old. I will work with her on it. From what I gather she thinks sissy means silly. not "not strong", she said she heard it on franny's feet?

Anyways I won't drill it into her today but we will have to go over it again and again and eventually she will get the idea.
