want to learn embroidery

Can someone recommend a book or what is the best way to start. I did some searching and it seem there are different types? I mainly want to use it on cloths I am making or maybe to make a jeans look more stylish.

I recommend Doodle Stitching by Aimee Ray. It's got cute projects and very clear instructions. Embroidered Effects by Jenny Hart of Sublime Stitching is also great. She has really, really cool patterns on her site: http://www.sublimestitching.com/

The books mentioned are great, and you can find stitch guides at the library. The nice thing about embroidery is that it is a pretty cheap hobby. I bought an Aunt Martha transfer and a flour sack dishcloth when they went on sale for 99cents each, and a skein of floss was 35 cents. I just practiced on that dishcloth until I was comfortable enough to start a project.

I started with stamped embroidery. Really its like 'connect the dots' for adults. There are tons of patterns to choose from at Joanns, Michaels or Hobby Lobby. I also like http://www.herrschners.com/. Be warned emb. can take a LONG time depending on the project LOL. I find it relaxing and it helps keep my mind focused.

The library also is a great resource. it seems no one ever checks out the craft books around here and I can get whatever I want w.o problem. (now if the library was just open and would stop cutting hours and services).

I, too, find embroidering relaxing. Embroidering on a pillowcase can be a nice starter and ultimately make a bed look cozy. I started on jeans and never practiced first. See if you like the look of three strands or the full six strands of embroidery thread.

I love Sublime Stitching SO much. LOVE. Great customer service and she's always running sales. I ordered a few of her patterns and the directions that came with them were enough to get me started. You can find really good examples of all KINDS of stitches online. I found a really awesome collection of examples at some point and now I can't find the link.

I have also taken my daughter's drawings and embroidered them on pillowcases and napkins and tea towels. Super cute. Hope to do some Christmas ornaments.

It's so easy to get started and find patterns and you can make things as simple or complex as you like.

I love Sublime Stitching too! We just had a Renegade fair in Austin a few weeks ago, and Jenny was doing embroidery demos. Her books are fabulous!

I saw all the updates on facebook. I'm not anywhere close to Austin, but I'm thinking of making a trip just for this next year.
