4 year old fractured arm and dislocated elbow & banned meds

Hi everyone,
Not sure what I am looking for here...just venting I suppose and trying to purge some of my guilt.

My daughter fell off a trampoline at a friend's house the other day. She fractured her arm, dislocated her elbow, and required surgery to place two pins into the joint. Wasn't a good night.

3 days later she's doing much better-she was released from the hospital the following day and after another rough 12 hours or so she seemed back to normal-except like my normal four year old but crazier. It's like having a toddler in the house-I have to follow her everywhere for fear she's going to break her other arm-she has no concept of limits on her activity right now.

The doctor prescribed two meds-one an anti inflammatory and the other a pain reliever. After her behavior seemed to escalate this afternoon (really, really hyper and agitated) I googled the pain reliever. It is BANNED in the U.S. (we're in Brazil) and has been for years. It's not recommended to give to children under 19. She's four! I feel horrible. I am planning on switching to motrin at this point and trying to treat her pain that way. I usually do so much more research on these things, but between the language barrier here, my husband being out of town during all of these events, and being 30 weeks pregnant I really screwed up.

Any other good advice on helping a preschooler heal from a broken bone? She'll be in a cast for the next 6 weeks or so.

Yikes!

My son broke his arm when he was 4 but it didn't require surgery. What was the medication that they gave her?

When I broke something recently, my doctor said that motrin slows bone healing. I don't know if that is true though.

Anti-inflammatories do slow bone healing possibly doubling the healing time. However, if an anti-inflamatory is your only pain relief option, then I would say it's better than nothing.

Now that the bone is pinned and, I assume, in a cast, you *may* find that she doesn't need much analgesia though. Do you have access to acetominophen +/- codeine?

I should clarify that the drug they gave my daughter is Metamizole (marketed as Novalgina). Anyone know anything about that drug?

Poor girl! I hope she feels better soon! I found a pretty good article with lots of info on bones and healing.

My DD broke both legs (also trampoline at friend's!) and a ped. friend told me to give her at least 2000 iu's Vitamin D to promote healing.

I would definitely try to get Tylenol 3 instead of Motrin if she is still hurting.
