Okay, DS's day care spends most of the day outside when the weather is nice. And her requirement for sunscreen is that it be no rub. I've looked at Kinesys, but I just don't think I can afford $18.99 for only 4 ounces. Our budget just won't allow for that (although if I knew that the one 4 ounce bottle would last the entire outdoor season, I might consider it). So now I'm thinking about the risks vs benefits. We know that protection from the sun is very important. DS is very warm natured and I don't think he would be comfortable in pants and long sleeves (I know that I am not warm natured and I wouldn't be comfortable like that--even light weight fabrics). So I really think we need to provide some kind of sunscreen. Is there anything that any of you know about that is not so expensive? Or would it be one of those situations where the benefits of sunscreen outweigh the risks of the chemicals?

I don't believe the benefits outweigh. Check out skindeep for their sunscreen guide. THere are many affordable ones. I have the Alba Botanicals but am almost out and will be ordering the California Baby or Badger stick mineral sunscreen from Amazon-it's a LOT cheaper on there and fast shipping.

I really need to have one that is spray on and no rub, though.... that is what day care requires. I have some lotion that is burt's bees and california baby. But they do not make a no-rub sunscreen. And I can't afford $19 for a bottle of sunscreen. Which is why I'm questioning the risks vs benefits

It's not about getting it on her hands. She just wants something easy to put on the kids. And frankly, she provides such good care of him and she works with us in so many areas. So if there are a few things that she asks us to provide to make her day a little easier, well... I'm okay with that.

Wow, I put regular sunscreen on 19 kids every day. I can't imagine making a rule like that if the only option is $19 a bottle
I find that even the spray on needs some rubbing. Or else it just drips off of their bodies. Maybe I am wrong, but it seems that way to me. I don't think mixing with water would work, it seems that that would require a lot of shaking.

I agree. The sticks seem easy-not messy, super quick, no other rubbing required...

Interesting, I don't think it would be good for little faces though. I hate the spray, I prefer the regular kind to the spray. I don't mind it though, I find it relaxing
I do wear gloves, though, thankfully none of the kids are allergic. I can't stand the feeling of 20 different sunscreens on my hands- my sunscreen included- no matter how many times I wash my hands during the application process.- shanniesue2

Well, I can find a no rub spray for less than $19... just not a chemical-free one... which is what I'm trying to make a decision on

i would make the money work. where can you reduce an expense to have enough for the product you have chosen? do you buy starbucks coffee on the way to work? can you cut out a few pleaseure trips to reduce your gasoline budget for a while?
my ds2 needs to be protected at all times from the sun, and i worry greatly about using chemicals on him. i bough UV Natural sunblock which has no preservatives, but its castor oil based and dried out his skin so badly. what we do is just use coolibar hats and shirts as a block instead of topical stuff. i know you said you LO is hot, mine is too. his scalp literally radiates heat, but he does just fine wearing the lightweight stuff from coolibar.
