Violent cough...professional advice?

I am not sure if this can be posted here, but I am hoping to get some advice from a midwife.

I came down with a cough a week ago, which has progressed to violent coughing paroxysms all day and night. I am coughing up yellow-green phlegm in the morning, but just have a persistent tickle in my chest the rest of the day/night. No fever at all, but the coughing is driving me crazy and I am concerned about my water breaking, placental abruption, or hernia developing (plus, my cystocele is bulging now). I am 18 weeks. My own midwife suggested using a thermaphore with eucalyptus oil, but I can't obtain one due to budget issues. I REALLY don't want to take OTC medication, but will do so if I can be assured it is safe. Any herbs/teas/other ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

I just had that two weeks ago, still coughing every morning until I gag. I'm 38w2d and was also worried about breaking my water, etc. The coughing did and still does get contractions going. I honestly had to resort to some OTC drugs to get me through it. I didn't like it, but I couldn't sleep, no sleep, no recovery.

Thanks for the reply. I think coughing during pregnancy is about one of the worst things to come down with! I am still having coughing fits, but mostly in the morning and evening. This is the type of coughs that will last for weeks. I have just been coping....

Same here. And yeah, coping has been the name of the game. I haven't weighed myself, but I'm sure I've lost a pound or two because eating hasn't been exactly easy with all this either. :-/

Have you been taking any C or D3? I think they've helped me some.

I hope your recovery continues to go well.

My coughing has subsided quite a bit over yesterday and last night, thank goodness. Now I have some nasal congestion and a sore throat. I have been drinking Emergen-C and there is vitamin D in my prenatal. This is my third pregnancy, BTW, and I remember having a cough with my first, though I was much further along, probably 30+ weeks. I survived that so I should live through this ! This time my oldest is in Kindergarten and bringing home all sorts of germs. I am dreading having a newborn and one in school at the same time...

I'm glad your cough is going away, that's great. :-) Is the D in your prenatal D3? If not, you might want to get some anyways.

Yeah, having kids in school does not help at all. :-( We home school, but my 16yo is in a volunteer program through our zoo and she still brings crap home all the time. Ugh.
