DD#2 & I were at a meeting at church today when an older lady I'ed never met (from another church) came over & said, "I'd hoped our daughter-in-law would breastfeed, but she didn't. They were worried about the baby not gaining enough weight - bah!" My young friend asked what that had to do with it, so I told her that babies tend to eat more at once from bottles than they do from breasts, cause the fluid comes out faster, so that might be part of it (I wasn't sure but thought that was at least part of the reason formula-fed babies may gain weight faster). I then went on to explain the differences between foremilk & hindmilk and the immunological benefits of breastfeeding. She wasn't nursed herself, for medical reasons, but she's seen me nurse both DD's a billion times, either at church or in her house. Hopefully today was another step in the normalization of breastfeeding in south-central Virginia!
