cutting those newborn talons

this little man has some serious nails on him.
I try to peel them shorter whenever I can but some of them don't want to budge and I'm wondering if I should just use nail clippers.

I am hesitant only because someone mentioned to me that
a) it is hard to locate where their nails really end and therefore easy to cut skin
and
b) won't the clippers make them short and sharp?

I use clippers

Just be really careful, don't cut the pink part. It helps to cut them when they're asleep, and have lots of light on the situation so you can really see what's going on when you cut them. I use regular clippers, too - not those baby ones. The baby ones never clipped well, in my experience.

ETA... I don't find that it makes them too overly sharp, but I guess i try not to leave real corners on them (those DO get sharp)

DH accidentally cut the tip of DD1's finger once. After that, someone suggested we bite them off. They're normally soft enough that it works really well and that's what we do for DD2 now too.

I use nail scissors. Tried the file but it didn't work.

the scratch marks across my chest and his face make it look like we got in a fight

I can relate!! I was determined to be successful at clipping his nails, so I tried in the hiospital he day after he was born. Ended up cutting his finger Haven't tried since. I've been biting and filing.

I bite them... but if I had a scratcher (Hazel doesn't seem to have that problem, thank goodness, but one of the older dds did), I'd clip.

I also clipped the finger of.. hm.. dd2 I believe it was. Pretty bad too (ugh, what a stellar mom, right?!)... but.. she's healed and fine now... no lasting trauma

My baby is almost six months old and all I have ever done is use a nail file.
The nail file takes minutes and works well on his toe nails also. Try various types, you will find one that works.
I will not use clippers, then again I also use a grinder on my dog's nails, I will not clip them either.

SUCCESS

wow, it was like a whole new world, not getting clawed in the middle of the night!

I just used regular sized clippers carefully and my boy still has all his fingers!
