DD took a bottle!!!

I know that's probably silly to get excited about, but here's the thing...with DD1 we waited until 5 weeks to try, and despite all the recommendations about how you're really supposed to wait until 6 to avoid nipple confusion, yadda yadda yadda, 5 weeks was simply too late for her. She would never take a bottle from anyone. It didn't matter if she was not hungry yet, was a little hungry or was starving - she was NOT taking a bottle. I had serious anxiety about that kid starving to death if I died. It didn't ruin our lives or anything, but it would've been so much more convenient if I'd been able to run an errand without her now and then without worrying she'd be screaming from hunger 45 minutes after I left.

So this time we decided to try at 4 weeks. I was all prepared for it to be difficult, but she started sucking the second that bottle was in her mouth and had no problems at all. She took 3 full ounces of pumped milk and I seriously could not be happier. We live out in the country, 45 minutes from everything but Kroger and Wal-Mart, so if DD wouldn't take a bottle it would essentially be impossible for me to run ANY errands without her until she's taking enough solids to hold her over for a few hours. That wouldn't be so bad, but if I were to take DD2, DD1 would demand to go. When you're just wanting to get a haircut or you need to stop at 5 different places, it's just easier alone. I'm sooooo excited.

I'm kinda jealous!

With my oldest (6 yo), like you we waited 6 weeks or so and it was just too long. Total and complete no go w/ any type of nipple, bottle, etc. Wouldn't take it even when we let him get a little hungry, when DH offered and I wasn't around, etc. No go.

It was so bad that with my 2nd we never bothered trying LOL.

Baby #3 is really a fantastic nurser and my supply is very good. We tried at 3 weeks. He finally took like an ounce or so with some coaxing. He kept spitting the nipple out. I was using one of those breastflow bottles that is supposed to allow a wider latch and more compression, etc. After that he was adamantly opposed.

I really don't *need* him to take a bottle. But in the past year or so, my parents have really been great about giving DH and I "date nights". Selfishly, it would be a wee bit nice to be able to do that w/ DH and reconnect. With 3 kids now I find that kinda hard sometimes. If I left my youngest with them, I hate the feeling of *having* to race back ASAP.

I should try again. I hate pumping though and I'm not sure I"ll keep with it often enough for him to "remember" how to take a bottle even if we have success.

But yea for you and your little one!!

(eta: like you we currently live a half hour from anything...so I can relate. It is an hour of travel time, and if we are going to be anywhere for any length of time at all running errands, etc. we would not have the option to leave our youngest all that easily...)
