I found this article, and could barely read past the first couple of lines lol:

If the reporter only knew!

It's funny how unsurprised you are by these "oops!" stories when you're into the homebirth thing.
I remember being a teenager and just being completely taken by these sorts of stories and thoroughly impressed that they did BY THEMSELVES! *gasp* Without doctors or nurses or a hospital bed!

I can see how it can be a fun story to tell though when it wasn't at all what you were planning. Hopefully it empowers the mothers it happens to.

These stories make me think of the people who ask me, "But..what if the baby comes before your midwife gets there?!?!" I've learned to reply cheerfully with, "Then I guess she'll be sad she didn't drive faster and missed all the action!"

This made me chuckle. Before we switched to our midwife I was using an OB 45-60 minutes away. People kept saying, "Hopefully you'll make it there!" Not only was this funny to me after DD's 50 hour labor but I kept thinking how perfect it would be if I didn't make it since I didn't want to have the baby in the hospital anyway.
I'm so glad that everything went smoothly for the mother and baby in the article.

So what was the safety pin for?

I know it's just semantics, but the husband and the phone operator get all the credit for "delivering" this baby.. didn't the mom do all the work?

why are they so focused on clamping the umbilical cord? Seems like in such a situation, it would be best to just leave it for the paramedics to deal with. Although I guess if it were short, it would need to be cut?

There is a story like this in our area every few months it seems! They *always* talk about cutting the cord. Once a woman gave birth in a convenience store and all they could find was a string from a mop head. (It was new, thankfully, but still...)

I had a planned homebirth last time, but it was unassisted because she came quickly. I am almost sure I would have given birth in the car if we'd planned a hospital birth. I guess we missed being in the top news story at 10.

I was watching an "amazing videos" show one time, and a cop assisted with a birth on the side of the road with his car camera running. You can barely see anything, but right after, you can hear the cop yelling to the bystanders "does anyone have a knife???"

He used some truckers pocket knife to cut the cord, and the baby ended up in the NICU with an umbilical cord infection The mom was interviewed and kept saying "thank goodness that cop saved my baby."

Good thing they were able to *safely* get them to the hospital after the birth.

My mother asked me that a few weeks ago. I happily told her that if that happened then my husband, who is a trained EMT, would be more than happy to help me bring his child into the world. She then asked me if he was prepared to handle that responsibility.:
